This is a continuation from Kubota pricing "2710/2910" that deserved it's own thread. We were discussing the issue of not being able to turn the PTO by hand for spline alignment when connecting equipment.

<font color=red>To all,
Doesn't all newer gear-drive Kubota tractors have built-in overrunning clutches? If so, doesn't this mean that the the PTO shaft should always turn freely in one direction?

Uh, dunno. I can atest that the hydraulically actuated pto cluth on an L3010dt doesn't turn at all in one direction and feels like you are picking up something firmly attached to one side of the shaft going the other. It is difficult to describe, but you can turn it 90 degrees or so by firmly gripping it, but litterly when you let go it flops back to it's original angle with a very distinct bang. It doesn't feel like a spring. Maybe someone with more schematic knowledge can explain it. Now I am annoyed with this design that on some models it turns freely and on some it does not. On other makes I am familiar with (both have 2 stage clutches), the pto turns freely in both directions.

Not quite what you guys are talking about, but.......

I have an L1501 with an external overrun clutch for the slasher etc. (Meaning I have none built into the tractor)

When my PTO is in neutral and tractor running, the PTO turns, apparently just via some vibration of something. You can stop it easily with your boot or something.

Any ideas? - Is this normal?

Seems harmless as anything would stop it, just one day I might get slack and forget it really is engaged

I can turn my pto by hand. I have a 2710 and sometimes need to turn the shaft to line up my rotary cutter.

The PTO shafts normally rotate even if the PTO is in neutral.
Think you'll find this is caused by oil being dragged around the input gear which still rotates when the engine is running, and the clutch is out. This sets up an oil circulation within the gearbox which then makes the PTO turn.As you say they can be stopped easily provided the PTO selector is in neutral.

I finally got around to checking the PTOs on my B7100 (gear drive) and my B2150 (HSD). With the engines OFF, the clutch pedals NOT depressed, and the transmissions in gear, this is the result of my "PTO turning by hand" test:

Both PTOs turn freely, in both directions, with PTO lever in neutral.

Both PTOs cannot be turned, in either direction, with the PTO lever in gear.

I know nothing about your hydraulically controlled PTO, so I don't know how it compares with either of the above PTO systems. It seems to me like it should turn freely if the PTO gear is not engaged. Nonetheless, you can use an external PTO over-running clutch (about $80?) to guarentee free turning in at least one direction.

Yep just replacing my over-run clutch (external model) and is around $158 Australian = $80 US !

Noticed something this weekend while I was showing off the L3010DT to my dad. With the engine off, the PTO rotates freely about 180 deg, then comes up against a positive stop of some kind. First time I had ever tried to turn it by hand with the engine off. I am personally not that big into always shutting the engine down for all the hook-ups and disconnects, but it seems to help with a hydraulic PTO clutch on the DT's. Now I know how to align the splines easy enough. I still hold that it is a poor design, but at least there is a work around.
