Hearing a clicking noise coming from my Bush Hog as I am shutting down and the blade rotation slowing I thought maybe I had a u-joint going out. However it appears the slip joint is loose. How are they measured to tell if they are worn to the point of replacement.

Grab it in the middle pull it and see how much it moves...........

Got some 澱ack and forth in it. That痴 what clicking as the shaft rotates you can see and obvious fall at the jct. area. Should it not have any, or how is too much measured.

Should be very little play , Maybe a bad u joint making the clicking noise........

I should have been a little more detailed with the clicking. As I shut the PTO and tractor off and bring tractor to a stop the BH continues to rotate for quiet a while. This is when I notice the clicking and the deflection in the shaft as it rotates. Not to say I couldn稚 have a u-joint needing replacement the noise I知 hearing directly corresponds in time to that square shaft rotation and deflection.

The pto shaft could just be worn out where the two half's meet......Are the yoke on the shaft lined up with each other?........

There should be NO movement in a slip clutch. They should be under some pretty high spring tension. Are you sure you don't have a shear bolt system? I'm not sure but doesn't the BH use a shear bolt through two disks? Maybe the bolt is loose. Post a photo.

Had the same noise once, turned out the blades were hitting a bent spot on the deck .You only heard it when it was slowing down.

Following up on 3gunr be sure the blade bolts are tight.

This unit has no slip clutch nor shear bolt. The shaft is splined at both ends.

Blades clear I can plainly see the obvious spot and the movement as the noise is heard. The reason I mentioned hearing it upon the Bush Hog slowing down was to make the point I could visually see the movement of the shaft at the joint.

All tight

I don't remember in my 60+ yrs being associated with rotary brush mowers ever seeing one without a slip-clutch or shear pin. What brand is your rotary mower?? Can you please post a photo of the pto shaft where it attaches to gearbox????

OK. I thought YOU said it had a slip clutch and it wasn't aligned or loose or something. I guess I read wrong.

I agree with TX Jim. Never seen BH without a some protection. That's a good way to tear up a tractor. It must have been removed/modified. Don't run it like that!

Still waiting for a picture. :confused3:

It is a Bush Hog brand.

Bought new the way it sets today. I have a friend with a Bush Hog Brand bought in the 70s龍 also. I think he has a model 306 with no slip clutch or shear bolt either. I spoke with a Bush Hog Rep. at their booth at the National Farm Machinery Show and he said years ago many were sold without slip clutches or shear bolts.

I have no issues with the u joints I am trying to determine what amount of movement Or deflection of the shaft at the slip joint is OK.

"Slip Joint" is probably where I got lost in the woods. It's a slip fit with maybe 1/8" of clearance (1/16" on all sides.) If it rattles, pack it with grease. Mine has a grease fitting on it.

Well I learned something new today! I never would have thought Bush Hog would sell a rotary cutter without driveline protection such as SC or SP. Photo is more informative than a 1000 words.

New to me too. Apparently, BH likes to sell driveline parts. :)

Did you attach some image(s) with your post? For some reason I can not open them Attachment on this forum.

Bones66,

He did attach a picture it looks, but for me, none have been showing up lately (not just this thread). I'm using the TBN app. Was hoping it wasn't just an issue in my end...
