PTO Shield

I recently purchased a 1428v w/ 80 hours on it. I noiced that when nothing is attached to the 3pt that if I raise it the lower arms of the hitch get caught on the PTO shield. There are two bolts in the lower arms( an adjustment point) that catch the shield everytime I try and get the lower arms out of the way. The arms have a light spring keeping them together and this seems to be what forces the lower arms against the shield. I've just about broken the bolts off of the shield when I lift it without looking. Should I adjust something here or is the shield the problem? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I guess I'll just keep an eye on her and keep some implement attached, although I am tempted to trash the shield since it makes it difficult to reach my PTO shaft coupling.

I can't help much because it seems that the 3ph arrangement varies with models in the 14xx series. Is there a dealer nearby where you can look at one on the lot to compare to yours?

ChrisJ,Do your lift arms have an anti sway sleeve with a retaining pin located on the outside of them which can be adjusted to fit implement widths?It goes from the the lift arm to the frame or it could also be a turnbuckle style that would require a few turns to pull lift arms away from pto sheild...Mark

you have to tighten the sway links on the out side of arms a bit more, i have that problem with my snow blower on because its not standard cat 1 distance between pins i have to remove the shield in winter.

YES!!!!!!! Someone else had the same problem I did!!!. I removed my implements and blindly raised the 3pt hitch without looking. Needless to say I crushed my PTO shield. $10 bucks later I have a new PTO shield. I called the dealer and had him come look at it and yes you are right the spring used to keep the lower bars from knowcking into the tires caused the problem. I was told to "watch what I was doing"!

One thing I did get from the dealer is that if you loosen the two bolts on the PTO shield it will flip up and be movable. Mine was torqued down at the factory so it did not give when I raised the 3pt hitch. Now it flips up (if I forget again) and also allows me to flip the PTO shield up and out of the way when I attach the implement.

Hope this helps (I know it did for me since I don't feel like such a fool anymore!).

Glad I could help out, my tractor was set up so it could flip also. I've since then used the adjusters to keep the lower arms spread, I also watch what I'm doing.
