pto slip clutch

That's what she told me. Would make a lot of sense since it's not a convertor, just a slip clutch. They have another that is smooth on both ends.

Greg you are assuming all shear bolt set ups look like yours. There is a very crude pic of my set up with 2 splined shafts shear protected in another thread about shear bolts. rickmacheske what grade bolt do you use in your set up? mine will only work with a grade5 2s pop as soon as you engage it.

Hey Pat, are you engaging your PTO at idle?
I have run a number of rotary cutters including an 8 footer and never had one that sheared at engagement except when I had a brain fart and dropped the hammer at higher RPM. The pins have always been gr2.

I was reading this thread because I want to convert my little JD605 over to a slip clutch. The SP arrangement on the 605 is very very funky.

Same problem I had in recently replacing the shear bolt in my 5' Howse cutter for the first time. The grade 2 bolts shear like butter at idle engagement and I hope grade 5 won't cause other problems. I also have a slip clutch at the dealers encouragement but no adjustment directions came with it, I hope it was right out of the wrapper.

Don't count on the slip clutch being set, 'out of the package'. You need to find the manufacturer, and request a manual.

Do you have any way to feather engage your pto.. even though you are at idle?

Go back to the dealer (or manufacturer's website) for the owner's manual. Slip clutches typically require adjustment (possibly cleaning) twice a year. Let it go longer than that, and the friction discs fuse - leaving you with no driveline protection at all.

Your GR2 problem is typically caused by two things; bolt diamter too small, or bolt holes egged out. Or both. But I also looked up the specs on a FarmTrac 360 - does it really only have a one stage clutch? If so, that's another big part of your problem.

Could it be a 1 stage clutch and then independent pto?

I seen some ind pto.. like onmahindra that are electric soleoid engaged.. and I understand the original units shifted in pretty hard.. later units had a softer engagement though.

Makes ya wonder about the farmtrac. if it is one of the ford clone models.. it may well have a clone of the ford 8x2 tranny.. with ind pto and 1 stage clutch..

Yup, just got a look at a little more comprehensive specs: http://www.farmtrac.com/pdf/FT360DTC_Specs.pdf. 12x12 shuttle, single stage clutch, electric PTO switch. No wonder GR2 bolts bust. I'd say that tractor is a prime candidate for a slip clutch.

I'd have to agree. I remember a discussion way back.. might have even been on a yehaa board.. about the older 3 digit mahindra with electric solenoid engaged pto's. They were bad about shock loads. You couldn't idle down enough to get them to engage smoothly.

I believe I read that later on.. there was a new version of the solenoid that actually offered some sort of 'sodt engage'.. not sure exactly what it was.. but perhaps an electric clutch or some such thing.. perhaps a wet clutch that took a couple seconds to build pressure due to an orifice or something.. and that was the soft engage.. not sure... I bought a NH at that time and stopepd looking at the mahindra..e tc.

Yes the Farmtrac 360 has both manual and independant electric PTO. The manual doesn't seem to feather in even at idle but I will attempt to more precise with this the next time I have the hog on. So with the slip clutch adjusted correctly and a grade 5 shear bolt will I be OK in terms of PTO or hog damage? Maybe thats why the dealer insisted on it, the Howse manual gives slip clutch adjustment directions but I don't even know the brand of the clutch.

Assuming the slip clutch is set correctly.. the shear bolt will do nothing but hold the slip clutch to the implement.
