I have a YMG1800D, which has a couple of settings for the PTO speed. From the bottom the order (I think) is: Slow, Neutral, Faster, Fastest. I have always run the brush-hog and PHD at the "Faster" speed, but the other day I made the mistake of putting it in "fastest" setting and it sounded like an airplane taking off. Then it got me to thinking: I wonder if I have been running it at the wrong speed. Do you all have any idea? Thanks.

If you have been running at the "faster" speed which is probably around 900-1000 RPM's, then yes you have. On the Yanmars usually the slowest speed is 540 RPM's which is the recommended speed for bush hogs, aka rotary cutters.

And most other power implements as well.

So is that more than likely the "slowest" setting (all the way at the bottom of the selector)?

You should have red mark on the tach, which is the speed to run the tractor, and low PTO. If you do this you will be running it correctly for about an american implement.

Great. Thanks for the information. As an academic question, what is the harm in running it on the faster setting? I imagine it would have to do with design constraints. In other words, it was desinged for 540, so running it at 1,200 (or whatever) may result in it flying apart unexpectedly.

You have got it, that is the reason. Those gears can only stand so much.
