I saw one made from an old brush hog gearbox in Farm Show. These have slip clutches and or shear pins for some protection from big hits.
It was mounted on a 3 pt carry all frame and had a steel plate base. The grinding wheel itself was made much as has been described here. two heavy circular plates weldeds together one a little larger than the other with teeth from Baileys. Im guessing in the 12-14 inch range
He had a hystat and he would just go back an forth over the stump lowering it a bit each time.
Looked good and he said it worked well.
