I would like to build a stump grinder that is pto powered and has 2 cylinders 1 up and down and the other side to side. Has anyone built such an animal? Anyone have any prints or drawings?

Thanks Very Much

I have seen some ate AG equipment shows, but no plans or anything like that. Thinking of building one myself. I have a nice right angle gearbox to use. The biggest problem I have thought of is how to make the grinder head/wheel itself. Any ideas on this aspect of the problem ?

Was thinking of ordering the teeth. Some are brassed on and some bolt on. I have a buddy thats a machinist. He would make the wheel.......Maybe 1/2-3/4 plate torched out 18"-24" round, machined finish. Bolt it to the right angle gear box. What do you think?

Id leave a rough finish it will wearto a polish in the first or second stump. I have a table top burner that traces out paterns and cuts heavy plate. Im thinking of putting an old course tooth 20 inch sawmill blade in it and burning the shape into a 1 inch thick plate. Then I could weld industrial chipper blades on the tooth blanks. Im also thinking of using it for a trencher blade to.
Id also suggest using the gear box to run the blade from a doble or tripple Vbelt. That way there is some slippage if you take too big of a bite, or abearingf locks up. Its too easy to bend a shft or worse brak one on a gear box like that.

I agree with others, do not run dirrect off gearbox, most of them do not have any side load capabilities (gear box that is) so set up to run off of a double bearing down a shaft for up/down and to a 2nd doubble shaft bearings that hold the plate and cutters on. the V's saw a 3 or 4 belt system, would be off one side and the cutter on the other. PTO into gearbox through shaft for updown if you wanted or you could use cylinder for up and down between the 2 bearing & shafts where the V belts drive. for left & right then you need to have a 2nd cylinder moving it to & fro at the lift arms, but keeping them in-line with the PTO so no binding accures. and even then 15 degrees would be about all you could get, so keeping the cutters out farther form tractor gets you more movement!

add WEIGHT at the cutter head too 3/4" plate leave un-finished except for the circumfrence. bigger is better with more cutter heads... even could use the small disposeable type triangle carbide cutters I bet /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif as long as the cutter head is machined to accept them... don't worry about ballance either spinning RPM should be less than 500 PRM anyhow too fast and it will spew chunks too easy every where.

What about pto to slipper clutch to right angle gearbox. Out of the gearbox with a splined shaft that goes in the center of the bearing mounted cutter wheel. I was under the impression that the wheels turned more than 500 rpm, does any one know for sure? This is a manufactured one. I like this design.

That is sort of what I was thinking on the grinder wheel so far. Carbide tipped would be necessart for weld on I would think. Also I would try to balance it as far as possible.

Nitroxn That would be a good way to mount it I thought in the previous post that you would want to leave the other end unsupported. I think you would need a heave right angle drive box like a heavy duty bush hog has to speed it up. I think they are a 1 to1.5 or 1 to 2 ratio to speed them up. One thing about having a bearing mounted on the end it may also help you if the shaft ever decided to let go.
I used to do som welding for a tree service that had a Vermeer stump grinder, Ill see how his shaft is mounted, I know his ran off belts I remeber having to tighen them or replace them on occasion. I think they run from 800 to 2000 rpm I think his was set to 1000
