I would hope I could let the cable play out from the seat too, but maybe not. I know one can use the Farmi to pull while in the seat, but not sure I want to try that one yet.

I have a Farmi. Yea, the controls will allow operation from the seat. Safety tells me to do otherwise... Having 100+ feet of cable out there in a line directly behind my seat generates too much pucker for me. I have a stretch of rope attached to the levers and operate from a safer angle.

I have owned a Farmi winch for over 25 years. I purchased the smallest one brand new for $950.00, I wouldn't take that for it now. It is by far the most useful tractor tool, well second to the FEL.
If you can find a used one don't be afraid to purchase it there is not much to go wrong with them. As far a operating it from the tractor seat it can be done. One thing you want to make real sure of, that you pull in a straight line behind the tractor.
You can put a lot of side stress on the 3PH arms and even bend or brake them if you are not careful, as they say don't ask me how I know.
The winch is a great counter weight for the FEL aslo.

My wife is the Webmaster of that site, and especially in the early days when I was new to Vermont I was her favorite comic topic! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif She divides her time pretty evenly between tourism and small farming. We live in the tiny town of Mansfield (pop 7) near Stowe. One hill over from the Trapp Family Lodge of The Sound of Music fame.
If you visit, I'll even let you use my winch to harvest next winter's firewood! Such a deal! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You live in a town about the size of ours, we have about 10 people living around here. It would take the EMS or police about 45 minutes to get here if we ever needed them. I looked on the map, you are 1,000 miles from here. Thats a long way to go to play with a winch but it would be fun. I will have to think about coming up there. How many acres do you have? I only have 5.5 acres to play on but the government land around me is better than 100,000 acres. This is the Pisgah Nat Forest I am talking about. They dont like my tractor or ATV on their land.

Yeah, that's a bit of a drive. We live right next to a tourist town of 3000 with police and fire/rescue resources for 50,000. It's nice having them close by if we need them!
We have a total of 155 acres, but only about six is flat (well, more or less flat) and clear. The rest is hardwood forest on a hillside that gets pretty steep in places. So the winch gets a lot of use, especially this time of year when it's possible to see the damaged trees without all those leaves in the way.

I offroad in a Jeep quite a bit. One of the safety rules when using a winch is to throw a blanket, coat, or something of that nature over the winch line. In case the line breaks or something breaks loose the weight of the blanket will drop the winch line to the ground. There is no way I would ever operate a winch while being directly in line with the cable.
