Massey Ferguson 590 4WD
Hello all,

I am continuing to sort out my Massey Ferguson 590 which we got the other month.

Sorry if this is in the wrong section - not sure if I should have posted in "Hydraulics"...

I now have a problem where the PTO won't disengage. It keeps spinning despite doing what the manual tells me and use the clutch and then operate the lever to the neutral position.

I got underneath the tractor whilst it was turned off and got someone to operate the PTO engage lever and see that it is connected to the main body of the PTO and does appear to be moving, but could it be an issue with the clutch? Do I need to put more hydraulic fluid into the fill which is in the floor of the cab?

Thanks

Hello DLTTrekkkers - no, it is just a normal clutch which I also use for the drive gears. Thanks

If there's an implement attached to the pto, does it actually turn that too? With any torque?

That is: Is the tractor's PTO's spindle really "engaged" (is there power there) or is it just sort of freewheel spinning (but with no real torque). (Quickly grabbing on to it to find out the difference is not something I would recommend to others. Maybe attach an implement to test?)

You are supposed to engage the clutch and then pull up a lever to the neutral position - I will take a photo and put it up - thanks.

Hello CobyRupert - I had a topper on it a while back and I could not get it to stop rotating - I have seen and heard about PTO accidents so have no intention of going any where near it whilst the engine is running - not nice to be wrapped around that! Thanks

so it is a dual clutch !
Feel with one finger if the pedal have freeplay !
Then with one hand pushing down feel if you can feel the mainclutch disengage.
Now sitting on the seat and pushing down with your foot feel if you can feel the pto disengaging ?
How mush freetravel is there ?
Adjust it to 1" and see if you can disengage the pto clutch ?
