PTO

I just purchased a john Deer 970 diesel 4x4. It does not have the PTO shaft from the tractor, it has a cap over the hole where the shaft is supposed to be. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to install one. Thanks Mike

No PTO shaft sounds pretty serious, because it should have one. It may have been broken/wrung off at some point. I can't help you with what it takes to replace/repair it. It would be interesting if you could let us know what all you find wrong with it. Good luck!

Did you remove the cap covering the shaft?

Some tractors have a two speed PTO, 540 and 1000. The speed is selected by pulling the shaft out, turning it around and putting the other end in.

If your shaft is gone, it may be this type and you can buy a shaft for it.

I agree with Kebo, it should be there and if not I would be pissed that it wasn't disclosed in the sale. Looking at the parts website you or your mechanic will need to figure out what is broken. May be more than a missing shaft. I doubt there are very many 30 hp compact tractors that use or offer a 1000rpm shaft and this model doesn't anyway.

Is the cover flat? or shaped more like a cup?

If like a cup, it is probably just adust cover. Remove it and see what is under it.

IF it is flat with bolts holding, i too would be upset

My Branson came with a safety cover over the rear PTO shaft since it also spins if you select the mid PTO option. Like LD1 asked is the cover cup shaped or flat.
