, I've seen starters left and they just spin like crazy on double voltage, for casual use that may be acceptable, otherwise the usual cure is to stack two 6 volt batteries and tap off the middle for the starter .

It is half the current at double the voltage, correct? So why the concern?

V=IR, so I=V/R. R (resistance of the starter) does not change...so I increases with V.

Someone check my math...

Volts x Amps = Watts. I think your math is correct because the load doesn't change. So if you double the volts the amps drop in half.

Nice to see some loving attention given to a deserving old tractor.

Now let's get to work on that crawler/dozer that was parked next to it! :D

Thanks! That's an old gas 6 cylinder Cletrac! I guess my family had strong roots in the Oliver brand! That one MIGHT be too far gone, but once I get this 550 done, I'll take a look at that Cletrac. I'd have to work on it right where it sits and I don't have anything big enough to move it. It will be difficult. LOL

My question. What are the projects under the tarps. Initially one looked like a 69 charger.

Close! Under those tarps are my '68 Plymouth Barracuda Fastback and my 1970 Dodge Dart! MOPAR to the BONE!!!

Fix it and I'll bet you can use it for years and then sell it for way more than you have in it. Have a skidder or tilting flatbed pull it closer to the shop. Closer makes life so much easier.

What's with the beer kegs in the yard? :D

in theory correct if you maintain a variable resisstive load that consumes the same power regardless of voltage, but in practicality, if you apply 2X the voltage to a load (starter) that has a relatively constant resistance, it will consume 2X the power (E^2 divided by R), with the end result that it spins somewhere around 2X the speed (it's not directly proportional), partly because the torque is increased due to the double electromotive force (voltage) which overcomes the somewhat static resisstive force of the engine's frictional and compression load.

The math is all well and good, but what it comes down too is that a 6 volt starter on a 12 volt system will work for many years if the tractor starts decently, if you sit there and crank on for several minutes repeatedly it will fail, many 6 volt tractors where switched to 8 volt and then 12 volt and the starters worked fine and lasted.

Lots of guys running 12 volt in their 6 volt stock Model A Fords... many with the alternator conversion... don't do anything to the starter motor.

I built a 69 charger as a daily driver in SoCal. God I loved that car. 10 years ago it came to the point I just didn't drive it (gas was near $5 a gallon). Sold it to some guy back east. Man it was a head turner in LA. And just a nice car to drive around.

I have noticed that seemingly every bolt you remove gets replaced with new grade 8 stuff. Then i noticed the new lug bolts and half were grade 2 and half grade 8. Great project.
