I replaced the engine on a Kemp chipper with a Horrible Freight horizontal shaft, and am having some difficulty getting the engine pulley to stay put. Any suggestions, or rules of wisdom for that problem? Just installed for the 2nd time with locktite on the setscrews and key, but wondering if I'm missing something basic. Only stayed put for an hour last time. TIA.

Are the pulleys running true with each other ?

They appear to be, I line up the edges with a straightedge.

You can try this LOCTITE 638

Does the setscrew contact the shaft or the key? If it contacts the key, it won't scar the shaft, but will allow drift. I've seen a lot of pulleys with a short setscrew with a star-like tip that is backed up by another setscrew to keep it from backing out.

Peter, I locktited it this time, set screws, key, and shaft. Going to let it sit over night before trying it again.

It should work....:)

You could replace the pulley with one that has a browning connector.
With this you wont have any movement.
McMaster Carr, Grainger should have them.

If there is a mark on motor shaft where set screw seats (when pulleys properly aligned), take a drill bit and put a dimple on shaft on that mark, use drill bit approximately the same diameter bit as set screw, and just go to point where flutes on drill bit disappear, no deeper... It creates a dimple on motor shaft where end of setscrew can seat.... Real problem is probably poor set screw fit in pulley threads...

That was the case for sure. Locktite seems to be holding, thanks to all.
