Hello,

I'm getting delivery of my new 2305 this Friday... *so excited....tee hee*

I'm curious about what size of cultivating implement I'll be able to tow behind it. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'd like to overturn the pastures in a few spots just to loosen the ground...which is mostly clay gumbo.

Is there a weight or width rating I wouldn't want to exceed? I've been reading about the 2305's "limited" category 1 tph. Should I be concerned about this if I want to pick up an old cultivator implement? I'm also getting the I-match hitch in the deal, which I'mhoping will speed up the connection processwith this type of cultivator implement.

thanks!

Welcome to the forum. I think you will find 'cultivators' come in all sizes and types for many uses, and I think weeding row-crops as the primary use of a cultivator (has sweeps that travel just beneath the surface of dirt to nip off the weed roots and cover the crop roots with some dirt).

However, your comment about "overturning the pastures" in a few spots has me thinking you are expecting more than a 'cultivator' and maybe are thinking of a sub-soiler. That has large, deep-running teeth (and for your size tractor not more than one, I would think) that rip up the ground. Your clay gumbo likely will be beyond the capacity of the 3205.

However, that said, there are small box blades I believe that will fit your limited Cat I and may have ripper teeth that will help loosen the pasture clay gumbo.

Talk to your Deere dealer about the attachments available to do the work you expect this tractor to do. Maybe a one-bottom moldboard plow could be fashioned together to work.

Wish you luck with this accomplishment. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Should be fun giving it a try.

My JD 4010 pulls this old soil ripper beast that used to be made for an 18 hp JD M. See attached.

Don't think it'll pull it through unplowed ground.

The JD 4010 also pulls this fine, to make raised rows.

Have wondered if I turn the discs to parallel whether they would cut through and "do" unplowed earth as well. Haven't tried yet. The discs are mounted on the same diamond bar that the 7 chisel plows were for soil ripping. I've now 4 chisel plows in the middle with 2 smaller discs that I call my "row maintainance rig": for maintaining my raised rows in place rather than plowing, which kicks up some fresh weed seeds each time.

(Sorry for the tractor color intrusion here /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I'm actually doing what you want to do with both Beenthere's and Ralph's suggestions, with good success. I too have heavy clay soil. My 48" box blade with 18" rippers works well as does and old used 6' springtooth harrow (almost the same as Ralph's rig). Some places just seem to work better with one tool than the other.
Cheers!

I'm thinking you might want to shun the 3 pt and use an older (small, 6-8 foot) deep tillage on a draw bar for the first run, GordNovo. That would loosen up the vegetation on the top layer. Once that's done you can go over it with a plow or ripper bars.

I'm just thinking this is pretty heavy work for a cat 1 hitch on a small tractor and doing it that way would relieve some stress. Also, you can generally get old, small cultivators on drawbars for about the price they'll bring as scrap as long as you don't mind installing your own hydraulics.
