Plumber putty works pretty good. You want the ability to take it out again for future wires.

I don't know if it was the right thing or not- but I have about a hundred feet of Cat5e wire and coaxial running in conduit. I drilled holes in caps that fit the end of the conduit, ran the wire through the holes and then used silicone to seal. If I need to run more wire, I can remove the caps.

To extend my DSL to another shop building, I direct buried about 300 ft Cat 5 about 4 years ago and have had no problems with anything--Ken Sweet

I envy all of you with DSL or Cable on your farms! I just bought 10 acres and it is doubtful I will have DSL or Cable for YEARS! I'll be stuck with crappy satellite.

Re: Pulling Cat5e wire thru 1 1/4\" poly pipe

It's been suggested to me to drill a 1/4" drain hole in the bottom of the conduit where it might have a low spot. That way any condensation or water that might get in has a place to drain out. Makes sense to me.

Also, got prices on Cat5e from local elec supply house. At 1000 foot reels, the normal Cat5e is $75, and the direct burial is $296. For a 500' run, that's $38 vs $148 or it seems $110 for the insurance policy that I won't have a problem. Seems like a good investment to me.

I'm with the camp to go with the wireless. It's cheap, easy and let's face it, who likes digging ditches?

All you have to do is buy an inexpensive router and network card with the ability to have an external antenna attached. Search EBay for antennas. I picked up a 7dbi with a custom connector for under $15 dollars.

I'm a computer geek who does wireless security. Unless you're living in a very heavily populated area you'll have very lfew problems with hackers. Plus, WPA encription is pretty good and most (if not all) new equipment will use this if you set it up properly.

As a side note, if you have DSL or the likes, you're really not going to notice any speed drop with 802.11g or above.

Tractor owners!

Anyway, When I build my shop a long time ago I procured about 100' of direct-bury phone line for only 50 cents a foot. I think it is 8 pair line, so I've got a lot of capacity that I'm not using.

It's worth a call to the phone company (or better, stopping a phone truck on the road somewhere and asking the driver) to see if they will sell you the remainder of a spool that's too short for them to use. You just might hit a gold mine if you catch the right guy.
