So, as some of you may remember, I have had to pull a number of rotted hoses out of my PT. When I changed out my high pressure filter it had large (1/4") rubber chunks in it. I wondered where this could have come from. I was talking with a teamster (a movie truck driver) the other day about the tractor and he said it was probably from pulling the new hoses. Per the ideas given here, I connected the new hose to the old hose to pull it through the tunnel. He felt what happened was that the old hose had oil in it, cracked up internally and deposited it into the new hose.

This make sense? Seemed to to me... So, I have 2 large tunnel hoses left to replace and am wondering what I should do so that this does not happen.. I guess drain the hose first....

After you pull, but before you connect the new hoses, you could put a few pigs down the hose. Catepillar does it routinely with their hoses post assembly, pre-shipping.

A "pig" being a piece of foam rubber that is approximately bullet shaped and slightly smaller than the ID of the hose. You put the pig in the hose, apply clean air pressure behind it, and it shoots down the hose, wiping it clean. The general idea is that the air blows around the pig, blowing the hose surface clean as the pig travels down the hose.

On the bright side, you have a high pressure filter.

All the best,

Peter

I saw one of the manufactures of my new hose use a "pig" but I did not see NAPA use it. The other manufacturer sealed the ends of the new hose with plastic covers, NAPA did not. NAPA charged me my gas money for the month for a 12" hose. The other did not...

But, good idea...

Just FYI. THese hoses were SO bad (How bad were they?) they could not bend without the outer cover coming off. Once the outer cover was broken off the flexed a lot better...

Like I said, I have 3 hoses that are hard as a rock... Going to whip out the shop vac and try it... Maybe as soon as the end of the month as I just got a call to go to Seattle for a shoot....
