Just purchased a used 790 last Monday. 2000 model 4wd with 200hrs and r1 tires. I read in a earlier post about switching the front tires around to widing the stance on a new one. Will this also work on a my model and is there anything I should look out for.

I'd be interested in reading any personal experiences on this subject too.

It seems swapping front wheels would cause premature bearing wear, but the added stability seems to be a fair trade off.

The fronts on my 790 came in the wider position from the dealer. I don't think it's much more than an inch or so difference. You also don't get that much stability until the axle has hit it's travel limit so be careful. You're better off widening and ballasting the rear for stability.

Congrats on picking up a great tractor /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have over 125 hrs on my 2003 790 ( with the r-4s)with the ft wheels in the wider stance .... I not sure thats a good thing /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif...but it sure makes me feel better when I,m useing the loader ... It sure feels more sure footed /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif... may put more wear and tare on the frount end in the long run.....but at the rate that I,m running up the hrs /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif... I'll eather trade it in or repair the ft end in say about 10 years or so . /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.....eather way it worth it to me /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thanks for all the input I might switch them around just to see what it looks like if I dont like it I'll change it back. I must say that this is a big step up from my 650 but I still like the size of the little 650. Quick question I had to add over a gallon of transmission oil to the 790. Are these known for using oil. or have I got a problem. I did have a small leak on the hose off the power steering unit and fixed it.

There are a number of 790 owners that frequent TBN. I've never read of any particular problems with the 790, including oil consumption.

In your case, I suspect the sump was never filled correctly during maintenance...strictly a guess, that.

I'd keep an eye on the level (which is part of normal maintenance anyway), but unless you see a dramatic loss in fluids, I wouldn't be too concerned about it. Not yet, anyway...

you should widen the fronts to be in the same track as the rears, if possible. You can replace a bearing, but you cannot be replaced if you happen to roll it. I have widened the front tread on many a tractor, FWA or not and haven't noticed anything negative. You really feel the surefootedness though. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
