Question about brakes?

I have seen several times, brake hoses get bad on the inside[look perfect on outside]fluid flows good one way but not the other.Drives one crazy trying to troubleshoot.usually i will take the calipers apart, check to see if pads are sliding ok[check for rust in slide ways[touch up with file.]If none of these seem faulty but brakes are overheating, change your hoses.I thought the mechanic that taught me this was a nut, until the auto parts guy said yep its true, then i changed the hose and problem ended.Seen this several times on different vehicles in my life. After you drive a few miles ,check and see if things are hot,if so caliper not fully backing off.
just an idea.

Is it me, or does it seem like the auto companies (not just ford, the rest too) make a good product, then cheap it down so bad it turns to cow patties - lose market share or get sued, then fix it back to where it was before?

It's not like they don't know how to make brakes!!!

You know how it works...big business higher-ups attend a dog and pony show and hear glowing testimonials for Six Sigma, Value Engineering, or whatever, then mandates that these "tools" (I hate it when they call things like this a tool but that's another rant) be used to capture a predetermined amount of savings in order to show the success of their use.

What really happens is you take something that works perfectly well, apply the magic, and screw up what has been working well for decades.

It isn't just brakes, either. Ford ball joints are a perfect example. I've got two Fords in the driveway right now, neither has more than 101K and the ball joints are shot and have been for quite some time.

I don't have rotors turned either. False economy to me. On my 96 F350 the rotors are behind the hubs so to take them off to be turned you gotta fool with the 4wd hub apparatus and the bearings then press the studs out:eek: . If I'm going through all that then I'm gonna put new rotors on. Having them turned on the car is not an option for me since I do my own work...if I was gonna pay someone to turn them on car I could probably just spring for new ones for less money:cool: Again- since I figured out the not holding the brakes after a hot stop and letting the truck creep I haven't had anymore trouble:)

I do my own brakes too. Every brake service for me is new pads and new rotors. It's just so much easier, and it's cheaper than paying someone else to do it. Plus, I know it's done right.

I can't tell you what your problem is, GreatWhiteHunter, but I know if I were in your situation, I'd get everything I could out of the dealer. You might have some success pointing out to them the frequency of your visits and suggest that they fix it right so that they don't have to keep fixing it.

That's exactly what I did today. Although they didn't need that pointed out. I'm a familar face to them. They aren't the best dealer but I don't pay the deductable since it's the same issue every time. I'm beginning to grow tired of the frequent trips there though. I may need to take it to another dealer and let them have a crack at it. It can only be so many things so I figure there bound to get it right eventually. I've actully printed up this thread an I'll be taking it when I drop the truck off. I want every aspect of the braking system gone through stem to stern. I really appreciate all the great advice you guys have given me here. I was really stressed feeling like I wasn't going to get this thing fixed. But now I feel the answer is in the thread.

It's too bad there's not some kind of customer driven dealership rating system and incentives to give it teeth. We all might just see some service once in a while.

Imagine if car dealerships, hardware stores, and department stores had to live and die by ratings the same way TV and radio stations do. It would be a different world.

OK, I'm late with my response but then again, I didn't get much info from the dealer....

I was told that this is common to the "middle" group of Super Duty's. The earlier 7.3's didn't seem to bend rotors and the '05 and up trucks have bigger brakes. The tech said having the rotors recut was a waste, and since I got the $3600 6year/100k mile extended warrantee, it wouldn't be worth it. The rotors are covered, with a $100 deductible. It was agreed that the pulsing wasn't too bad, it wasn't a safety issue, and since I will need brakes in 5-7,000 miles, they would do the pads and everything else then.

So this is a known problem, and the only thing to do is ante up yourself to fix it, extended warrantee or not.
Not a very good solution.

Agreed.

Now it's a matter of how many $100 deductibles you want to put out before you upgrade out of pocket.

I guess how big a waste of time it is depends on how nice their waiting room is and what they have playing on the big screen TV while you're waiting for your brakes.

The deductible is "per visit." I didn't argue any hypotheticals with them because, thankfully, I haven't needed anything on the truck until now.

Now, the waiting room is OK, the TV is small and fuzzy - but the Donuts are Free! Woo-hoo!

That's the same BS I got from my dealer. Mine goes in again on Monday. I told the dealer this is the last time. They will be going through the brakes 100%. I'm going to hope they find the cause and fix it. In a year or two I'm going to buy a GMC with the Duramax. I'm a ford guy but enoughs enough. I'm so tired of spending hard earned money for some dealer to tell me I shouldn't expect perfection out of a vehicle. The sad part is my wife wanted an explorer. Guess what were getting a chevy. It's pathertic how little pride goes into manufacturing these days. Everything is disposable. Makes me sick!
