Question about HST "transmission"

/ Question about HST "transmission" #11
I realize all the points made about being on a hill and PTO engage/disengage. And the get it between L-M-H and rocking the pedal bit is what I've been doing for years b/c that's what the manual suggested (yes, I actually read mine :) ) but that works worth poo.
OK. By your own admission, you said your HST knowledge was "non-existant", so without this additional information I had to assume your experience level was "newb" and cover the basics. :)
Kudos for reading your manual.

Bottom line, if you prefer using the clutch, then by all means, clutch away.

Ahh, sorry, I meant that I don't know the innards of the tranny.

I have found on my L3240 that raising the FEL slightly while shifting between ranges seems to help make the shifts smoother.I don't know why but I would guess that it takes hydraulic pressure off the transmission.

I have question about Transmission, I have a Kubota Tractor L3350 I thought my Transmission Or Clutch went out ,my bucket also quit working So I changed Hydraulic transmission fluid and new filter everything worked again for a bit then it quit
working again it was kinda merky looking with some partical bits in oil so I drained hydraulic oil out another new filter,if that doesn't work where do I look next . Dorrie

If that doesn't work then come back to this post and I'm sure there are members with knowledge instead of attitude that will be glad to answer your questions. Some times people with no answer get testy and don't speak for anyone but themselves.

The L3350 tractor is a gear-driven machine and would not have Hydrostatic transmission. But they were available with hydraulic shuttle, which is really two hydraulic clutch packs for forward and reverse. They are powered from the same hydraulic pump as the loader, and 3-point hitch lift. So if the pump is starved for oil, everything quits working. The filter is on the suction side so the oil needs to be clean and at the full level. L3350s are getting near 30 years old - many (most) have not had yearly trans oil changes. I think you are on the right track to completely drain and replace fluid and filter. If doing that restores performance, even temporarily, that's a sign that doing it again might well solve it.

Not familiar with your model, but Some tractors have a filter screen in the oil sump in addition to the canister filter. Investigate this possibility on your machine and if yours has one, make sure the screen is clean before refilling with oil. A clogged screen wont let any oil into the filter or pump.
I had a Yanmar tractor once that the clutch stopped engaging just like yours and it was the filter screen that was stopped up. This would only be the case if none of the hydraulics work on your tractor.

My L3400HST has always been a PITA to switch between L-M-H.

By accident the other night I discovered that if I have the clutch in and depress the HST pedal to reverse for a moment, release the HST pedal and then try to switch between L-M-H it's about 1,000x easier and slides right in.

So my question is can anyone see any reason I shouldn't depress the HST pedal while the clutch is in? I can't see any reason to not do this, but my knowledge of HST transmissions is non-existant.

Thanks,
j

Make sure your pedal linkages are well lubed and the zerks greased. This has helped me. C.
