2 questions. What is the difference between a Cat1 and a Cat2 tractor/implement? I have a small JD 850 with 3 cyl Yanmar. Is that Cat1? Secondly, has anyone used the quick connect sold by Northern Tool, I believe its called Pat's Quick hitch. Thanks

See the chart below to explain the dimensions differences between CAT 1 and CAT 2
.. Your JD850 is CAT 1.. Yes hundreds if not thousands of our members have and use the Pat's quick hitch.

Category Hitch pin size Lower hitch spacing Tractor drawbar power
upper link lower links
0 17 mm (5⁄8") 17 mm (5⁄8") 500 mm (20") <15 kW (<20 hp)
1 19 mm (3⁄4") 22.4 mm (7⁄8") 718 mm (26") 15-35 kW (20-45 hp)
2 25.5 mm (1") 28.7 mm (1 1⁄8") 870 mm (32") 30-75 kW (40-100 hp)
3 31.75 mm (1 1⁄4") 37.4 mm (1 7⁄16") 1010 mm (38") 60-168 kW (80-225 hp)
4 45mm (1 3⁄4") 51 mm (2") 1220 mm (46") 135-300 kW (180-400 hp)

Pat's system will save your back but a true quick hitch will allow you to just stay on the tractor, however there are inherent downfalls to the quick hitch, one being not all attachments you have will fit. A few of mine were off a bit and I had to move the connection points to make it work. But now I can dump the box blade off and pick it up in a matter of 30 seconds. Guess it depends on how often you change implements.

I have Pat's on my JD3032e
they work great and make a 2 person job that would still take 5 min to a 1 person taking less than a min
Pat's also gives you more room and flexibility to hook up your PTO than a true quick hitch
MY :2cents:

I have the northern tool quick hitch, just for the op knowledge its different tan the pats system. YMMV but I prefer the quick hitch over the pats system but that's just my opinion.
