What is the weakness of an engine engineered to run a little bit hotter? Shorter life span of components, more likely for coolant to over heat compared to a DPF engine? I would say the the thought that people have about DOC being more reliable than DPF is mostly based on the fact that at no point is the DOC tractor forced out of operation for a filter burn off.

Engine itself does not run hotter. DOC runs hot all the time via the catalytic process.

First of all, it isn't my goal to trash the environment. I did intentionally buy a used tractor that doesn't have the Final Tier IV equipment. There may come a time when emissions will be controlled without sacrificing reliability or incurring ongoing maintenance costs. We're close, but not at that point today. The nearest hope is DOC. My OPINIONS are based on what I've read and understand:

* Unless you're in a third world country with high sulfur diesel, the DOC will last as long as the tractor and without maintenance.
* The DOC itself, and not the engine will run hot, like the cat on your car.
* Even though many owners report no problems with regen, many others do. Why chance it if you don't need to?
* DPF's eventually need to be cleaned or replaced.

I did consider new tractors the last time. Mahindra was a front runner, but the cabs were too small. The Massey dealer told me in 2018 they would be coming out with similar mCRD engines soon. Not sure where that stands. Not knowing if the Kubota B3350's legendary emission system issues were specific to that tractor or something that may later emerge on other tractors was one of many things considered.

I've put over 500 hours on my tractor in the last 21/2 years, and the only regen which put me out of production was the first because I didn't know how to use it.

Somebody mentioned going with a used Tier 3 because his use in mostly in short bursts. I can understand his reasons for that and it is something to consider if you're going to be operating that way... especially in winter.

I checked TractorHouse for used L5740 vs L6060 tractors as an example. Used L5740 will cost about $28k with loader (HSTC) and a L6060 about $40k. There doesn’t appear to be a premium for used Tier 3 tractors like predicted when Tier 4 was introduced. I replaced my 800 hour L5740 with a L6060 now at 600 hours and couldn’t be more pleased. Cleaner, more fuel efficient, better reliability (although no engine problems on either but traded when L5740 had major drivetrain problem and I couldn’t wait for repair). Someday the L6060 May let me down but so far it’s been very good. At the same time I replaced my bigger tractor with a much bigger tractor so the L6060 ends up doing more of the things that my M135GX did that the M7 is just to large for.
