ProjectKing,
I have a L3901DT with R1s, I have been doing a lot of loader work moving dirt around and the R1s work just fine. I use my tractor mostly for firewood cutting and the R1s are great in the woods. I also use the tractor for road work (driveway and private road). The only reason I would think about R4s is if I needed to drive across my yard all the time. Based on the two forums that I read, there are more people that get R4's that want to trade/buy R1s than the other way around.
When I bought my tractor the dealer told me that he would deliver the tractor on the next Tuesday with R1s. He called a day later and told me that he didn't have any R1s and he would give me the R4s at the same price. I thought a long time on it, I had to called him back because I couldn't make up my mind if I wanted the tractor faster or wait for the R1s. I'm glad I told him that I would wait.
