R1s or R4s?

Well, never had a little bx,must not be good in mud than if it won't leave tracks in a wet yard!
[its no so much tearing up the yard I've noticed with ags,its the real deep lug imprint they make, and when yard dries, you got a washboard kinda thing going on]

The damage I get on lawns is R-1 lug tracks, a little scuffn on a sharp turn but not bad with the 790. With rear tire ballast

1*Never gotten any of my BXs hung up in mud or on anything else.
That's easly prevented by not getting on it when it's to wet and soft.
2*As for lug imprints I just drive my BX 1500 with the turfs over them.
Irons the imprints right out pretty good.
Lots easier than filling in ruts created by a spinning turf tire.

Thats a bigger heavier tractor than my BXs.

Spruce, wish we were closer. We could have a tractor pull off.

My 790 against yours with the only diff being R1s to R4s.

I'm afraid to say I'd be putting my money on your R1s.

...maintain a gravel driveway...haul wood in the winter. R4s...still offer the traction needed for winter work.
I personally run turfs, but have noted discussion such as these in the past.

On finished turf, I believe R1's to be just fine if you can live with the chance of "chevrons" if you're on soft lawn. Turfs are perfect, but if they slip, they'll leave a mark. R1's probably won't slip, but if they do they'll leave a hole.

You've worked with R1s, so you'd know better than anyone what they'll do to your gravel drive.

Some may have a strong differing opinion, but I believe TURF tires to be best suited for smaller snow storms. R1s have a clear benefit if you're buried and clawing through tough snow, but once the snow is CLEARED, I'll drive laps around an R1 equipped tractor.

This will really stir the nest, but this is my opinion about R4s: I'm starting to believe that they aren't the best of both worlds, but the worst of both worlds. They don't have the deep lugs of R1 tires, so they'll only do so well in the dirt. They don't have much bite in turf. Nor do they have many "shoulders" (as turfs do) to work in the snow. I think R4s look good and are well suited to forklifts to distribute load while having more bite than a "slick" tire. But tractors need either R1 or Turf, depending on the function.

I would think you'd be best off with R1s.

Willl, I could have got r-4s, They are a more beefy, bigger tire by design. But I had width restraints on me. Most of the work I do Traction trumps over most. I Do like my r-1s ALOT:D Nice loader grapple by the way.......

Turfs are made for..turf. Question was r1's or r4's in new york state,[think he should get turfs for snow removal and other stuff, over r4's or r1's??

I think there are really two purposeful tread patterns that do well for which they were made. Turfs for Turf and Ags for sloppy, muddy, hilly, snowy terrain and where a lot of pullling is involved. The R4's will do both but not as good as the other two....:)

He didn't ask about turfs, so my conclusion wasn't "buy turfs". R1s vs. R4s, I would think that R1s would be the way to go.

Please understand that in our area, "snow" is 6 inches and "hella snow" is 12 inches. I can count 18+ inch snows that I remember in my LIFETIME on 3 fingers.

With that understanding, and to your point, I feel strongly that turf tires will outperform R1/Ag tires every day of the week and twice on Tuesday in low-snow and ice conditions. I apologize for not modifying/adjusting my opinion based on regional atmospheric conditions.

Also, if moving firewood over finished turf (from the 'back nine' to the back door, for example), the turf tires will do better with a fully loaded FEL in not messing up the lawn.

But in his case, it seems that R1s are the deal.
