Benny just inspect it with your eyes.....or reader glasses im sure its fine....don't worry about it.
the other major thing is to roll the bearings in your hand and feel for flat spots......when the gear chewed itself up there was most certainly a over pressure event on the bearings.
flat spots will give a small tug as the bearing rolls......(replace them if you feel that).
the balls are (O of R) in mechanical terms.......out of round....once this occurs replace them.......and as well test them on shaft 4.

this is where shaft 4 couples to in the hst.

Interesting... in my tractor the snap ring (first one on the right at the bottom in your screen shot) isn't there and there is a spring around the shaft that is not shown in this photo. I'm guessing it should be between 4 and 12
See attached photo... i have the snap ring from shaft 4 pulled back and have a hose clamp holding a spring back that appears to be pushing the joint/coupler into the snap ring on shaft 4.

Top down view... Damaged pieces being replaced are all in the bottom section of the case....
--the top shaft (all splines are sheared off),
--the large gear (this fits on to the PTO shaft that extends outside the tractor, that you see from outside) and
--the small gear at the bottom (just held on with a snap ring)

Anyone have any idea how to (properly) remove this top shaft?

I tried to be careful removing the rubber cap from the outside but it would not budge and i ended up tearing it (luckily i had ordered a spare). It appears to be sandwiched in there pretty tight.

I'm not sure if i'm supposed to remove the shaft by tapping/hammering it out from the inside somehow? Tapping on the bearing or on the spindle section???

Would this be in the service manual? IS there even a service manual for these tractors???

continue Benny ......use a brass punch to tap the shaft out the back try to find a solid ledge or gear to use the BRASS punch on....do not use steel items to hammer inside any transmission........but do so while holding that couplet tight in hand (Partner with someone to hold that) don't let that go swimming in the bottom of the case...the shaft should slide out as long as all c-clips and the rubber plug has been released.
those rubber plugs appear to be sacrificial....the new one is to be installed with Vaseline. keep going your fine.

Benny all your photos below this post failed....and yes sometimes the parts book does not follow the inside of your tranny.maddening....its the same on the 3040 I had washers where washers were not in the parts book.

I think there's a c-clip just inside the back of the rubber plug unspring this....and remove it. Use a brass punch to hammer shaft backward after you inspect the other bearing ports for c-clips.

Ok, so the rubber cap is not only rubber. I could see metal when I tore it and now that I finally have the new one I can see it clearly inside and out. It is metal with a rubber coating on the outside. It is a very tight fit and doesn't appear to have any notches or anything to grab onto so I'm (almost) at a loss at how to remove it.
That snap ring next to the cap appears to be holding the shaft/bearing from going backwards so tapping the shaft backwards (in hopes of popping the cap out) from the inside seems like a no-go?!?

I'm thinking now that I have the new shaft and cap, I can better see how tight it goes together...maybe I can tap a couple small holes (not too deep, of course) for some machine screws so that I have something to pull on?????
I'm sure that is probably not how the book says to do it, so I'm open to suggestions.

Thankfully my brother will be over for the next couple days and he will have a solution.

"those rubber plugs appear to be sacrificial....the new one is to be installed with Vaseline."

...does this just come from experience or do you have some additional insight on this procedure with Montana or other tractors with similar caps?
