They were trespassing, it's as simple as that. They had ample warning to leave and if they can't control their dogs, then they shouldn't be hunting there and letting them loose. There is no debating the subject.

There can be alot of debating...permission may have been gotten from every land owner around ... know one bothered to talk to General Lee cause his 8.5 acres is 5 miles north and them dogs won't go there ... oops they did ... the attitude there's no talking keep walking ... well he impressed those hunters allright.

I know Dr's, lawyers, bankers ... as well as the good old country boy hunters that run coon dogs ... you ever tried to control a coon dog on a hot track thats 500 yards ahead of you? Its easy, just whislte and he stops at the posted fence line ... he will not tresspass. I believe most states have laws to allow a coon hunter to retrieve his property off your property with out your permission.

We had a man nearby us get into trouble. He was new to owning land and didnt know the hunting rules. Here a hunting dog can cross property lines since they cant read. All the other land is either owned by a few or leased from timber cos. We this guy ad 50 acres in the middle along a major creek. State law also says its illegal to harm a hunting dog in fact its a felony. One evening he came by trying to get me to cut and sharpen some pipes to stop the coon dogs and mules. THe mules have to stay at the boundary and the hunter have to enter un armed. I minded him that the dogs didnt know any bondaries and he gave the its my land Ill booby trap it.

Well one set of dogs trailed a coon and it went on his place. When the hunters got there they found one of there prize dogs skewered. He was still alive. The hunters knew I did metal work and they came to the shop at about 11 oclock and made 3 calls. The vets office, SHeriff and game warden. I had a porttable grinder and a hacksaw and pipe cutter.

I had a few disposable cameras from an accident kit in the dump truck and they borrowed those. The man had driven the pipe in at a long angle low to the ground. A game warden happened to be in the area and was first on scene. I was asked to help and I went down and sure enough it was some of the pipes that he had come by to get sharpened. He had them done in another shop in town. He had actually put the pipe off his place as to stop the dogs before they got there. He actually came down and pulled a gun on the warden. That didnt go good as he got to ride in a sheriffs car.

Same goes for Rabbit and deer dogs. They often cross hunting club lines. Most deer races stretch for miles. We have the Tenn Tom water way to deer run on but the other thing is on the farms they run often dogs will get out. We have seperate dog seasons to not inter fere with still hunters. A local man had a deer dog shot and dumped on his lawn. He let his dogs out on a practice run before season which is legal. No other live stock around here. Rode down the road and to the turnaround to get his dogs. His race started on the waterway but they had gone off an gotten on some brush land. He heard a shot and didnt get his dog back. That night someone dropped his dog out in his yard. After that he made it hard on the still hunters in the area for that comming season. Most dog hunters do respect the bondaries and other hunters.

I used to coon hunt a good bit. actually used to go with friends. my thing was the coon hunting mule I rode. Occasionally we get a few deer or coon dogs come by worn out for a hunt often a long night. We put them in the pen and feed and water them. Usually that evening they are gone. Alot of times the hunters will leave a few dollars for feed and care.

Ever wonder why there is a decline in turkeys, waterfowl and all types of birds. what do you think robs the nest and eats the eggs. There are too many coons, and hunting is about over with here because of the reasons mentioned above. If you have lived on your country property for a long time you realize that wildlife has to be controlled. Overpopulation of any species is not good, but its hard to tell the gentlemen property owner, bygod his property rights cannot be violated. Don't get me wrong there is also a generation of young hunters that need to respect property rights. Almost everyone that had dogs have sold them, the lease hunters lease yearly and the neighbor boy can't access for squirell, rabbit or coon.

Overpopulation of any species is not good

Especially when that species is human.

Currently the world population is approximately 6,995,158,939, thats nearly 7 BILLION people, and growing exponentially. No other species on planet Earth can boast of such huge numbers, except perhaps insects or viruses.

Why does the person that moves into the county turn into a angry worisom afraid of hunters that may get on THERE land. Maybe a 10 foot chain link fence with razor wire on top of this would let him sleep better. Also large light on each corner of the big 1/2 acre of land. with 17 trees in back yard.
Some have mentioned they got there weapon and confronted the hunters. others have called the Game Warden Most of the time it is some one or small group that lives around you. Only following the dog that are after the coon and if compitition the coon is not killed.
Now if your animals are attacked it is not a trained coon dog.
Now what is your dog doing as you sleep in your secure posted and no trespassing signs
on display. If chasing and killing my calves and I complain do you say sorry or call the sheriff about the harassment your neighbor is giving you. it takes 2 shoes to walk peacfuly in this world.

I'm in the camp that thinks it's wrong for hunters to trespass or run their dogs on private property.

I also don't see much skill involved with hunters that send out dogs to tree an animal, then to show up later to shoot it out of a tree.

Something tells me that this thread is about to get a lot more... interesting.

I will never ever deny a man his right to hunt. I love it myself and can't get enough. But to me, a person should respect boundaries and property. No excuses.

Where I live it is getting harder to find decent places to hunt. Most landowners are very hesitant to allow hunting and it is for a good reason. People over the years are loosing respect and courteousness.

The one thing I have often pondered, how is it that someone can mistake a 1000lb plus cow or bull for a Southwest Virginia deer? There is a big size difference.

Times change. In old England, the common law made allowances for hunting dogs because hunting was for obtaining food and materials.

The hunting of wild mammals in England and Wales with dogs was banned under the Hunting Act 2004.

Today, hunting in the USA is entertainment. The more hunters disrespect landowners, the sooner the laws will be changed here also.

If your entertainment spills over onto someone's land, and upsets the landowner, you should apologize and make an effort to avoid repeating the circumstance. Face it, when your entertainment conflicts with the landowners' peace and quiet, society is going to favor peace and quiet.

Well ya ... in the very first post made by the OP. The hunters where not given a chance. They violated his 8.5 acres and comments like "make it quick" and then sneak out hide behind a tree in the dark and then something like "stop talking and get walking"

No opportunity for the hunters to even introduce themselves, explain the ordeal ... make an apology ... sad.
