I asked this question previously but I got no response so I am asking again here. I am about to take possession of a new 2038r and I noticed under the hood that there is no filter screen in front of the radiator. It does have the front grille of course, but my 2305 has an additional removable screen right in front of the radiator and it collects tons of dust and debris that would otherwise end up in the radiator when I bush hog. Is it normal for a tractor with a larger frame to not need the additional screen? I commonly mow 5-7 foot tall weeds that shower down seeds and chaffe. Certainly a smaller frame tractor is going to be more susceptible to that dust, but does the larger frame tractor rise above this dust? And if it does not rise above the dust then what prevents the radiator from clogging with dust when bush hogging?

I appreciate your input as I plan to keep this tractor for a very long time and I plan to take good care of it.

Thank you very much in advance,

Actually my dealer just called me about this 5 minutes ago and he said only the 1 series has this screen due to larger tractors having multiple radiators and no place to put one. Peter, I agree that an additional screen would be good and I am wondering if other owners have had cooling/clogging issues with their radiators or how one would rig up a screen to put in place.

Thanks for the input. I may try to rig up something myself

On the JD770 I had the screen slide down from the top

Wow... that is a surprise. All the previous 2-series had screens in front of the radiator. They are very important if you use your tractor for mowing. If you have a temperature gauge you can see the engine temperature increasing as the screen gets clogged and stop and clean it before the engine over heats.

Not sure what the dealer means about multiple radiators. Most tractors have at a minimum a engine coolant radiator and a oil cooler.

Heck, my old 9N even had a screen.

Jgayman,

The 2038r has 3 radiators in a row, making it difficult to place a screen down right in front to stop debris. He said no jd tractors larger than the 1 series has this screen. He told me he looked all over his lot and didn't find the screen on the 2,3,4 or5 series.

I also wondered about the "multiple", but decided meant "multiple" models.

Regardless, making a screen to do the job should be doable for most.

When I get the tractor delivered I will get a picture uploaded so everyone can see.

Good , I believe you that it does not have one , I just can't believe that JD would do it that way makes no sense ....:confused3:

The JD 2025R built in Feb 2015 has a screen in front of the radiator.

I cannot find this tractor with the three radiators in a row in jdparts. Maybe two are oil coolers.

Where is the OP Sl2305 located? Some reference to European tractors in jdparts.

Beenthere,

You are correct, two of the radiators are oil coolers. For reference, I live in Southern Illinois. I don't think this is a European issue.

My 2720 has a rad screen but not very much is collected by it. The screen in the grill collects the majority of it. When I have the ruff cut mower on in the late fall to mow the water way in the field, I need to clean the grill occasionally but the rad screen is good until the job is done.

My 2305 was the exact opposite. Everything made it through the grill and was stopped by the rad screen.

Bigtiller,

Do you know if the grill was different on the 2720 over the 2305? Maybe a newer grill does a better job at filtering than the 2305?

My guess is the screen on the 2720 has a tighter mesh than the 2305 had. Another guess would be maybe they have different air flows leading into the radiator. I never had a chance to compare them side by side.

The current 2038r is a brand new tractor. It was re-designed from the ground up and is very different from previous versions. That could also explain why the parts catalog is not yet complete. It's technically a larger frame tractor than it used to be, based on the 3e chassis but with 2r series features. I bet as some time goes by the p/c will get updated, but wouldn't imagine that it would be terribly difficult to design something.
