Radioactive Fence Posts?

That is a very important point that needs repeating. Casual, infrequent contact with low level radiation is not normally a cause for concern. However, it's another thing to inhale these materials, and carry them around with you for the rest of your life, basically assuring that you are constantly exposed to the radiation 24 hours a day. This virtually assures that even alpha emissions, which are energetic, but cannot penetrate much more than a sheet of paper, are perpetually bombarding your body with radiation...not to mention some of these isotopes can be extremely poisonous.

Don't ingest it, don't breathe it.

Internal contact with Alpha is worse than Beta which is charged electrons . Alpha is a helium nucleus with two neutrons and two protons at about 5Mev energy levels, that is why it does not travel as far in air and can be stopped by paper.

Externally Alpha is not a concern and Beta causes skin and eye lense dose. Internally Alpha is a greater concern than Beta .

Plutonium any one?

I log on to TBN to identify my version of hydraulic coupler-an hour later I'm an expert in particle physics!

I LOVE these Internets!!!

Compared to the high temperature chemical reactions from a frying pan?
My Grandpa is 93 years old and fries up minimum 2 meals a day in his cast iron pan with a health scoop of lard. In his later years he started reheating his previously fried foods in the microwave.

Stick around, there is always more to learn here.! You just wait until I go off on one of my tangents and start talking about HF radio wave propagation and the declining sunspot cycle. :)

Yup... unfortunately about 2 more years to rock bottom. Cycle 24 (which we just went through) was one of the smallest in recent history. In other words it really sucked. Hopefully cycle 25 will be better. Who knows...

I have a collection of cast iron frying pans and dutch ovens, best cookware ever. The 12" is most commonly used but the 14" dia, high sided frying pan is the favourite however the element on the stove top doesn't hear to the outside edges of the pan. It has a matching 14" lid with a handle that can also be used as a skillet. For the campfire the 20" will toast sandwitches for everyone at once . There is a matching lid for the 20" too.

I got a three piece cast iron set. A casserole that holds a cup, one three in square skillet and one three in. Round Skillet. They work just perfect for many different campsite cooking methods.

But just how radioactive is that cast iron??? Have any of those pans ever fried any oilfield residues?

If I am reading your post above correctly your offering to "toast sandwiches for everyone ".... I assume that's us at TBN , I will take mine with a egg sunnyside up and the toast golden brown !! ..thanks , ship to Echo Bay please, Postmaster knows me , Only a few hours from wherever you are ;)

I drive past your place twice every September and I've been waiting for the invitation for about a decade.
The toasted sandwitch is often rye bread , real butter, various kinds of cheese and boar meat/summer sausage .E.D.Smith real ontario ketchup. Local craft brew .

NORM is not much of a concern unless you ingest ALPHA particles as suggested above. Wash your hands and wear a respirator and you will be fine. Way to many people hear radiation and lose their minds. The landfills in PA are set to a ridiculously low level. I think its only a few microrem above background(around 10) which varies from location to location and permit to permit. I had "hot" loads rejected that even laying on top of the boxes would take over a week of constant exposure to get a higher dose than an x-ray. I do not recall the exact numbers but there is radiation all around us. Make sure everyone puts on their tin foil hats.

:D I'll take a tuna melt in the cast iron skillet!

. Over the years some impromptu "science" was conducted using it. Box Elder bugs unexpectedly took the prize, beating cockroaches by a wide margin...another myth busted.
.

This is both hilarious and terrifying!:thumbsup:

I retire in October so will be home weekdays after that ! Putting the Kubota to daily chores instead of weekly . ;)
As for radiation , I worked in the uranium mines for ten years !

I went down in one in Grants New Mexico one time. It was enough for me; I told those miners that they didn't have to worry about me taking their job. Had to quit smoking for something like 8 hours before they would let me go down because of the adverse action of Radon and tobacco. None of the miners smoked (supposedly) but most of them dipped snuff. It was also erie driving by the mine vents in the morning with the vapor blowing out of the vent holes.

Often wondered about smoke detectors...

We had a very early one with a rather unique battery and expensive.

The label said for disposal return to place of purchase... they refused to accept it... this was maybe 40 years ago.

My head hurts reading this...I didn't know I was back in science class. No test, please!
