Raising a barn

Now all you need is some thin copper sheeting to cover it, and a rooster wind vane. :)

Are you going to attach the untreated wood directly to the metal roof?

That is one heck of a view!

Btw, how deep is the stone? Trying to plan a small pole building for our place and don't want the cost of concrete for the floor.

Kyle,
We are planning to use the same color as the sides of the barn with the trim being dark brown. (same as the barn)

Eddie,
The frame will sit on the roof but it will be sealed all the way around. No water coming in from the anywhere.

jrclark,
Since I was back dragging the gravel with the FEL I'm sure the depth changes but it should be about 3-4 inches. When that gets smashed in good I'll put some smaller gravel down for easier walking.:)

My son and I have finished the Cupola. Now that's it's done I wish I would have gone with a 6/12 pitch instead of the 4/12 pitch (cupola only), but it still looks good I think.

The work bench is next but will have to wait until the hay is cut and stacked in the barn.

Looks good. Nice to have a son that is a good helper...looks like you, too. I see the snow has almost completely melted off your mountains.

Thanks, I feel a little guilty having him work, he is on leave. (active duty Air Force) so I don't like to put him to work when he's on vacation. Last year when he came home I was building the barn. I keep putting him to work and pretty soon he might not come home.:(

Yes, the snow is about gone down low. The higher mountains of Utah still have plenty. Some of the roads have just been opened up this last week. I'm going to try and go for a Harley ride and check it out. Just need the time.

I was going to wait until fall and build a work bench when it was a little cooler. However I am on vacation and not really doing anything so I thought might as well start on the work bench. Here's a couple pictures of the progress.

It can't be seen, but on the left front side I have a piece of the leftover beam used in my house construction. It is well mounted and solid. This is were the vice will be mounted. I plan to have a metal top made.
More pictures as the work progresses.

Always good to have as much work space as possible!!!

Why did you go with 15 amp outlets instead of 20 amp outlets at you workbench?

I did want as much table top space as I could get. (without going crazy) It's about 12' long. It'll sure beat the plywood on barrels I've been using.:)

Don't pay attention to the wire color. It was wire I've had for years. All the outlets are 20 amp 12/2 romex.

You've been saving wire for a long time!!!!

It's funny because I ran out of wire on the other side of the barn. When I went to HD to get more it was yellow. I had no idea the color changed. Of course I'm a plumber by trade not an electrician. I generally avoid electricity like the plague.

I try to avoid plumbing and electricity.

I got my metal top done and installed. It is so nice having everything coming together.

I can start moving some tools in now.

Thanks.
The metal is only 1/8" with 7/16" OSB under it. It is nice and solid though.

Really nice. My buddy just did one and he welded a piece of 1" angle iron around the perimeter with the V pointed up just like a "V" trough flush with the top surface. He welded all around the edge and ground the welds smooth. Now, if he's rebuilding an engine or transaxle, he figures his "V" will hold a quart or 2 before it spills on the floor. Also, if a ball bearing or something rolls it won't fall to the floor.

I like to mount my vise' near the corner of the table, giving 270 degrees of access.

This may be hard for many of you to believe, but I have never had a work bench. I'm 53 years old, married for 30 years and all the work I've done was always on the ground.:confused3:
Yesterday I started repacking the bearings on my utility trailer. (tandem axle) It was so nice to stand up and work cleaning the bearings and using a vise to hold the hub so I could get the seal out. I could kick myself for being so TIGHT. It was never an issue of not having enough money to build one. Just plain old tight wad. I am coming out of that shell I think.
