Probably not drop near as much in fuel mileage when a trailer is hooked up.
A point that is mostly forgotten in the Diesel vs. gas debate. When towing often, your MPG goes down and Diesel pays off quicker.

2014 Ram HD trucks get 6.4-L Hemi, chassis upgrades (video)

"Complementing the 6.7-L Cummins turbodiesel in Ram Trucks 2014 heavy-duty lineup is Chrysler's 6.4-L Hemi V8 that will be available from the 2500 models through the 5500 chassis cab. The engine delivers SAE-certified 410 hp (306 kW) at 5600 rpm and 429 lbï½·ft (582 Nï½·m) at 4000 rpmå‚*est-in-class output among gasoline-powered pickups, the company claims.

å…¸hereç—´ strong customer demand for increased capability without having to step into that diesel, said Kevin Mets, Head of Engineering for Ram Heavy-Duty Pickup Trucks.

é„*n active runner intake system [helps to] provide that low-end torque that is required in a heavy-duty truck, but without sacrificing that high-end power, Mets said. çš„f you look at the torque curves between this engine and our competition as well as the 5.7-L Hemi, the 6.4-L generates as much torque as the others but at 800 to 1000 rpm less.

So even though it only has 20 more ft-lbs torque, apparently it is tuned to provide it at lower rpm. 429 ft-lbs of torque should be plenty for most of us, I would think. I remember when the first Ford International diesel came out in 1985 (naturally aspirated = no turbocharger), it only had 335 ft-lbs torque & everyone thought that was plenty.

It is pretty clear truck makers don't see diesel as a cost-effective powerplant as long as diesel fuel taxes are much higher than gasoline for light duty trucks (light duty trucks pay same fuel taxes as semi trucks, which is wrong).

Probably worth remembering at the next election.

Hear Ya !

Didn't really mean to dwell on the Polly Ticks (thread disruption that it is) but it is depressing to see a truly efficient technology hobbled like this.....

Preaching to the choir, I know, but this from a recent Toronto Sun Auto section....

2014 Kia Rondo 2.0L gas engine 6spd automatic - real world test: used between 12 and 13L/100km.

2013 Ford F350 6.7L diesel 6spd automatic - real world test: used 13.5L/100km.

Yeah, I know, unscientific test by auto scribes - no argument on that. I suspect that those real world #'s are pretty typical though.

The mileage for that Kia is atrocious .

The mileage for that Kia is atrocious .
I get a consistent 6.7l/100km with my S70 2.5 TDI 5 speed manual. That is, allways 140kmh on the highway and usually first at the traffic lights. When doing a round trip picking up a 2 ton tractor, (which means 50% empty trailer, the trip back home loaded) i get 10l/100km at a steady 90kmh. (i dont want to go speeding when exceeding my tow weight by 50% or more)

The father of a friend has a Prius, and he feels being screwed because it cant get better mileage than a Diesel in the real world driving...

Many of the auto reviews in the paper today aren't much more than puff pieces. That mileage is bad enough on the Kia that even the reviewer said it was not acceptable, even considering dealing with Toronto traffic.

So.... you're towing 5,000# plus with a solid built intermediate (here) sedan, and still getting way better mileage than a gasoline mini-van hauling empty/no trailer.

Seems like a much better way to utilize a barrel of crude. UNcommon sense does not apply, this side of the pond.
