So.... you're towing 5,000# plus with a solid built intermediate (here) sedan, and still getting way better mileage than a gasoline mini-van hauling empty/no trailer.

Seems like a much better way to utilize a barrel of crude. UNcommon sense does not apply, this side of the pond.

This is true but he is paying more than double for a gallon of diesel compared to a gallon in the US. Yes, less crude, but the same operating cost to the end user. You didn't think there was a free lunch did you?

I think it is a combination of smaller engine, manual transmisisons and maybe slower driving.
We were in Australia recently and we had a rental Nissan SUV. It was a little smaller than a Honda CRV, a 4 cylinder, auto with all wheel drive.
We drove it all over Kangaroo Island on mostly paved roads, usually around 6o mph or less and over four days it averaged 27mpg.

True, I usually focus on the technical issues first. That's my point - we (Canada, USA) could be getting much better true value out of a barrel of crude.

The "cost" at the pump is fabricated by the .1%. As I've said before, with the right foursome in the golf cart, diesel/gas cost in the USA could be inverted before the back 9. Or, is all that talk for the last 15+ years about energy efficiency and security just a smoke screen... :laughing:

Overall cost to the consumer.... you don't want to know what a waiter in Luxembourg takes home. In addition, the 1 hour plus 1 way car commutes in Western Europe are much less common than here. So they have less need to consume a lot of fuel going to and from work.

I prefer to focus on the technology, I can't afford the blood pressure meds to do otherwise.... :rolleyes:

Remember, we are dealing with a US gallon here and across the pond its Imperial gallons.

So their gallon is 1.2095 US gallons or 21% more.

If they claim they are getting 35mpg thats really only 27mpg. If they claim 44mpg that is really about 34mpg. If they claim they are getting 50mpg thats really 39mpg. Ect.

Yes!! Your gallon is 3.76L, ours us 4.554L. Makes a difference on ratings.

I only wish the price was the same converted, and not mire like it is now. :(

I grew up with both gallons.

Today, I prefer L/100km . Makes comparing (Euro) apples to (N. American) apples consistent and easy.
