Mr funnel - that's the one they advertise that bush pilots use, and it won't let water through? That's probably even more effective than the Yanmar tank inlet screen.
Yanmar's screen is good, about like the hydraulic 'strainer', but I wouldn't switch over to it now. I think it is to stop rust flakes, twigs, dead bugs etc typical of old rusty jerry cans. Imagine refueling daily out in the boondocks in third-world conditions.
Regarding Yanmar's design goals for the fuel filters: I went and found the following paragraph I put in an old post long ago:
---------------
From the YM240 manual: "For maximum filter life, sediment and water should not exceed 0.10 percent". That's a huge amount of rubbish, 3/4 ounce by weight, maybe a couple of tablespoons, added for every tank of fuel. If the manufacturer says the tractor will meet specs when fed that much garbage continually, then our much cleaner fuel shouldn't need a second filter.
--------------
The common cap is interchangeable with the gauge cap. While the tank can 'breathe' through the gauge cap, you can get a vacuum lock (fuel starvation, and a crushed tank) if the common cap is screwed on tight. The inlet trash screen has a notch or something to let in air as needed but I still don't screw that cap on tight.
