Just for kicks, here's one that I bet you will never guess where it's located at.

Has anyone ever seen a ranch entrance built from cut down telephone poles. Would last a long time. I have some I have been thinking of making an archway with. How do you think that would look?

I'm thinking about building/installing one of those ranch type driveway log entrances like the ones you see in the west, you know, the kind with the two tall vertical poles and the horizontal pole across the top. Anyone ever done that? Do you think one should put on the horizontal pole before it is erected or put the two vertical poles in the ground and then somehow put the horizontal pole on top afterwards? My thought is to fabricate it first, then erect the whole thing, but I am open to suggestions. I do have a FEL and that should be helpful. What say ye?

Just did :) Found this post looking for something but here's a shot:

I made it 10'4" wide and 12'6" tall (the extra inches were more a function of 'fudge factor' than anything else.

this in a way has been touched on,

but unless you can drive a full sized semi truck through it, with a full box trailer on it,

put in a good sized gate off to a side of it so a large vehicle can get through, (cement truck fire truck or other, moving van)

Saw that here or in another forum and have just the place for it. Actually also have another entrance that is a better drive. In my case the road isn't actually as wide as the entrance less then a 1/4 mile from my place spanning just 9 feet with rock on one side and a drop off on another....a Kenworth 12 yard dump trunk made it through though ;)

With the way fire season is starting in California I'd make sure any entrance is wide and high enough for a fire truck to come through even if it is for the back forty and gets very little use. It's better to allow them quick access when the flames are far from the house than at the back door. I had a neighbor put one up and had to take it down when the fire chief said he wouldn't be able to safely drive through in an emergency! only had a couple of inches all around for clearance:eek:

I always thought the entrance was there to make a statement about the prosperity and value of the property.

Make it big, much bigger than the minimum possible size allowed...

IF a second entrance is available and preferred for larger traffic, make sure the 911 has that info in there records, and a Information sign may be in order on the entrance area,
