From what I've read the price has definitely out paced inflation!

Look at the pricing on self releasing snatch blocks. That will get your attention.

Years & years ago I bought four HD snatch blocks. Heavy cast iron body, grease-able center bearings - rated at 30K each. Paid around $40 each - darned if I can remember where I have them stashed. But they are sure nice..............

You loaned those out, years ago. You will never see them again..:D

I have a few of the HF blocks, I bought them one at a time, using their 20% off coupons, that are everywhere!

Word of advice: get a block rated DOUBLE what your winch will pull. Physics.

I've always bought 5/8" blocks from tree service suppliers like WesSpur, and they generally run $70-80 for a decent model. The good ones generally have a WLL of 2,000# and breaking strength of 20,000#. I normally spend another $10 to get one with ball bearings. I sometimes use the blocks to ride along a rope suspending a load below (poor man's yarder) and bearings make a big difference there.

For tree work, this is not a place where I'd cut corners, as these things are used in situations where you depend on them, and if something broke it could create a huge safety risk.

I broke a 3/8" cable with my F150 2by. I think it was rigged for 4x advantage and I had to jerk it. SNAP" and it watched the short end with hook disappear over the canyon. Glad it went that way and not back at me.
