justractors, I'm hoping that big ball of lint I found in the glove box with the impressions of rat (mice) bodies in it was the nest. Hopefully if there were gonna be any babies, it would be there. Maybe I interrupted them before they could do any procreation, or maybe they're doing it right now in my heater vent.

I finally had time to read this post! I almost fell out of my chair laughing this is just too funny. I dont mean to make lite of your situation. I know if this happened to me I would jump out of my skin. I Grew up on a farm and more than once saw my old grandmother pick a rat up in here hands and twist its neck and deposit it in a trash can. She was a tough old girl. May she rest in peace.

Hi! Funny from over here. Probably not so funny in the seat of your vehicle.

About moth balls. Every year misplaced moth balls kill or seriously sicken family pets like cats, dogs, even parots. Not saying they shouldn't be used to repel pests but they can be put in a container with little holes punched in it. The vapor will get out just as well as if the balls were just lying on the floor but no family members (4 legged animal type or crawling or todler infant type will be poisoned). People indiscriminantly toss them in the yard/garden because it will keep x, y, or z away from the garden, flower bed, or whatever. Any old plastic jar with a scrrew lid will make a good safe holder. Just punch a bunch of small holes in it, small enough to not let small pieces fall out (you always end up with small pieces as the stuff as it slowly sublimates (direct solid to vapor change of state without liquid phase).

Get a boa or other good rat catching snake and let it go in the dash after the buggers.

somebody stole the cheese from the trap and it didn't go off!

That's the main reason I changed from peanut butter and cheese to the bacon. Cheese crumbles too easily and they can get it off and I think they just lick the peanut butter off, but a quarter inch piece of bacon tied with thread isn't going anywhere until they trip the trap, and besides that they seem to be more attracted to the bacon (possibly because they can smell it and find it quicker?). I have also used a small piece of pecan tied on with thread. It seems any of those baits work sometimes, but bacon has worked every time for me.

Allan:

If they are in your heater vent perhaps try turning up the heater system to high. You could also place the moth balls on the heater air intake so they could get the full effect. You may also try the heater on full blast using the recirculatory function to make life misserable for them.

I've not found anything that works as reliably and consistently as a small piece of raw bacon tied onto the trap with a piece of thread

Ditto Bird. Best bait I've ever come across. I've tried peanut butter and, while they love it, I've had the nasty little critters lick every bit of it off without tripping the trap. Never had one do that with the tied on bacon.

Well, looks like its gonna be bacon next. Last night the critters licked about half the peanut butter off but the trap still didn't trip. I almost pulled a Wylie Coyote and see how hard it is to make it go off, but decided to use the broom handle.

Since I'm allergic to peanut butter my wife had it hidden. She thought it was "nasty" for me to put some on the trap. It was hard to convince her I would take it out of the jar and put in on the trap and not do a double dip.

Well I'll chime in on this one, last summer I had my driveway paved I moved the old S-10 back in the pasture behind a rock cliff, well the truck never made it back to the driveway, first invader to her were a nest of NASTY hornets found out the hard way as one of those buggers stung me on the hand, swelled up like a baseball mit. Finally got around to moving the truck back to the driveway before Xmas battery was dead opened the hood to remove it and charge it you guessed it saw two mice scurring away, the entire hood liner was gone. Charged the battery re-installed to my suprize it started right up, decided to take her for a test ride didn't get far and the temp guage went all the way to hot pulled back in the driveway started to investigate, those #%&^% mice ate an entire section of the lower radiator hose, installed a new hose cleaned out the fan unit assembly the truck now sets proudly in the drive rodent free./w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

I had a friend call me the other day and say he had preheated his oven to cook a roast. During that process he smelled something funny. He opeded up the oven to investigate and found a mouse being cooked in the bottom of the oven. I guess they can get into most anything given the chance. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

About 5 years ago my late Dad and I were checking under the hood of his '76 Chevy pickup. There was a squirrels nest down low near the front, full of pecans and acorns the squirrels had socked away in there. And this truck was being driven regularly. Dad was so soft-hearted he didn't want to disturb it.

Some people have said to get some cats. Well, they can cause trouble like that of their own. One time my dad drove his truck to our church a few miles away, and when he got there, he heard an awful noise coming out from under the hood of the truck. He opened it up to find one of our cats decided to hitch a ride. The cat was freaked to say the least, and dad knew that if it got away, we'd never see it again. Now this would have been just fine with him, but my mom and sister get kind of attached to those things. So as it jumped, he grabbed it and threw in in the back of the truck (he had a cap on it). But not before the cat managed to bite through his thumbnail and pee all over his arm. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Our cats took an unauthorized drive a different time, too. We were going camping and had our (pop-up) camper set up in the yard a couple days before we left. When we got to the campground about 45 min away and started to open up the camper, were we surprised when our little black cat came shooting out and into the woods. We figured she was gone for good, but unbelievably, we actually saw her a bit later on and managed to catch her and send her home again. Set a trap. Cats are just more trouble. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Yep, Chris, cats will sometimes look for a warm place to sleep, and a car engine that's been run recently seems to suit them pretty well. In the mid-70's neighbors across the alley from us started their car in the driveway, heard that terrible noise and found their black cat, "Midnight", tangled in the fan belt. He survived, but the vet bill ran over $1,000./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

I've read a lot of these posts, and nobody has mentioned a product called Mouse Out. It is an aerosol lubricant that has a mouse repelling odor. You just spray it on a piece of cardboard and leave it in the cab when you park the car. Keep the cab tight (windows rolled up) to concentrate the smell. It works. Put a couple other pieces under your hood when you leave it parked (take them out before you drive it!). Mice just don't like the smell and go away. It's $18 for a 20 oz. can, and you can buy it by contacting The First Snow Bank, Box 821, Belfield, ND 58622, (701) 575-2255. I'm told some NAPA stores sell it, but not my local store. The smell doesn't bother me at all, but some may not like it. Hope it's helpful to someone.

By the way, I also had an interesting experience while I was driving down the highway and a mouse came out from under the passenger seat. It climbed all the way up to the headrest, then went back under the seat. Definitely startled me, but I managed not to wreck. Then I started using Mouse Out. No more mice!

Brad.
