My Kubota is really quite, even at full throttle/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.

Unfortunately I agreed with the dealer and he cut off the vertical exhaust and put on one of the flapper covers that opens when you start the tractor and closes when you shut it off. It does that job very well, but it rattles and the rattle is loud enough to be annoying. (I couldn't even hear the rattle on my last tractor because the Massey engine was so loud /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif.)

Before I go buy an original exhaust pipe and put it back the way Kubota designed it, is there an easy and bullet proof way to stop this exhaust flapper from rattling all the time?

Does it rattle because it's flapping closed or just because it's loose? If it's flapping closed, you can add a little weight to the counterweight, so less exhaust pressure is required to keep it open. Then it'll open and stay open.

It rattles because the pivot point is loose. I have tried to tighten it but then it won't close (but doesn't rattle). I guess I will try to find a spring to go on the bolt and see if that works. It is not rattling opening or closing.

Wen - cut the darned thing off and cover the pipe with a Campbells soup can when you park it just like the real farmers!

wen, you want to defeat the purpose of the Audible Indicator that tells you your exhaust cap is working?/w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif Of course, you use PaulB's soup can suggestion, and then when you forget, you can once again do like the real farmers do; Support Your Local Mechanic./w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Wen, have you considered drilling out the pivot points and inserting copper or brass bushings. Any descent clock repair guy could press new fittings in a few minutes. This would remove the slop and the associated rattle.

Wen.
Have you try useing a bolt with nylon washers?

Not to be a smart @ss but I yet seen a flapper that doesn't make noise, and if you should find one please let me know.

Soup can.....mmmm, well growing up on a farm a soup can or any type of a can was consider must part of a tractor, and you always remember to take it off a Farmall Super H or else.(

Why did you decide to cut your exhaust and install a flapper?

Take care and good luck.

Gosh, thanks for all the tips. I will try them. I really deserve this problem since it was the first and only attempt to improve on the Kubota, and it worked best the way it was. Maybe I will just buy another exhaust pipe. Yes, I agreed with the dealer and they cut it off before delivery. Surely a new exhaust pipe couldn't cost much could they?? /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I think for your own safty it would be best to be in a sitting positing when the price of the pipe is quoted./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
Good thing about Kubotas then dont breakdown very often, the bad thing is some of their part prices run pretty high when they do.
To get rid of the flap a short extension added on to the existing pipe held in place by a clamp---just an idea Gordon

Wen, I remember on the old Kubota board someone had a problem with their folding ROPS rattling at the folding point. I think the solution was some rubber or nylon washers. Try that before your start replaceing and cutting.
