Tractors purchased in Canada with 60 pto hp or above are GST exempt. If I bought the same 5425 in the US and imported it I would have to pay both taxes and I would not have been eligible for the Equine Canada Members Plus rebate program which amounts to 23% off list. I would have payed a lot more for the tractor if I purchased it in the US.

One thing I like about JD is they are up front about pricing, it's not a mystery. You can spend hours on the Deere.com website spec'ing out different models/options and seeing what the results are.

When it was time to buy, I had a pretty good idea what I wanted and how much it was going to cost. Kubota, NH, MF couldn't touch it.

jcaledon - give Mutton Power a call or send them a note. They are pretty responsive and will ship right to your door. You can easily expect to get 10 to 12% off the configured price based on the JD website.

Worth giving them a call to see what they quote you.

Personally, so long as the price is within a couple of thousand of dollars, I would buy locally. Much more than that and I would go looking. You sure you don't want a nice orange one like mine B.E. Larkin seems to be quoting great deals these days!

Thanks for the heads up in terms of Mutton. I may just do that. In terms of orange v. green, I haven't made my mind up as of yet. I did stop by B.E. Larken, and they are working on a price for the new B2620 for me. Right now, the list price for a new B is about the same as a JD2320, when IMO it should be a few thousand less. The machines spec out almost the same (the JD is a little stronger) but the Kubota is missing many of the premium features found on the JD. I think that the JD compares more closely with the B2630, and not the B2620. Much of this has to do with the fact that Kubota did not adjust their prices as much as JD did last fall. Apparently, Kubota will be making further adjustments next week. I'm hoping that this will bring the Kubota price down by about $1500. If that's the case, I will have a real decision to make. I really like the three speed hydro. But if they are the same price, it is a no brainer for me - I will go with the Deere.

I keep on reading here on TBN that green paint is expensive, but up here in southern Ontario, it's actually the opposite (for the moment at least).

One more thing - I want to thank those who pointed me in the direction of B.E.Larkin. They have been working hard to get me a machine at a price that I'm comfortable with. No matter what color I go with I know that I will be dealing with a first rate dealer. Green Tractors (Nobleton Farm Service - speak to Daryl) and B.E. Larkin (speak to Josh) have been first rate. It took me a while to find a Kubota dealer that I was comfortable with - but all is well that ends well.

That sounds like a good deal. I'm from NS show maybe I should go back home to buy my tractor. I'm going to hit the streets soon here in Ottawa for prices. I hope to find the same.

I bought my BX24 in December /07 just when the price adjustment began. Paid 16,600 plus tax. A good deal. This is in Nova Scotia. dealer about 50 miles away had it on for 19900.00. Rip off.

I`m a "newbie" and trying to learn and suck it all in.....23% discount!!..Excellent learning and knowledge based web site for us " trainees". Can you explain what the Equine Canada Members Plus rebate program is and whats required to comply ?...23% discount PLUS no tax if over 60 HP?

jcaledon - you are quite right about prices in Southern Ontario - Green vs. Orange.

Primarily because Kubota has not lowered their prices. Although I'm quite hear that when you hear back from Josh you will have a pretty good price. He priced me out a GL 3540 in Dec and the price was pretty close to what I could get it in for in the USA - within a couple of thousand anyway.

Hi Beaverhouse,
If you are an Equine Canada member and run a "full time" horse operation such as boarding stable, breeder, racing stable etc. you are eligible for up to a 23% discount on John Deere products. Other associations are involved too. AQHA and others.

Just google "equine canada members first" and you will get a list of participating members. Sherwin Williams and Dodge are also included. Guess who's products I'll be re-staining the barn with?

The GST thing influenced us a bit in that - why pay GST if you don't have to. You can claim it back if you have a GST number though. We don't. That ruled out tractor models that didn't quite hit the 60 pto hp mark such as Kioti DK65, Kubota M6040, JD 5325, MF3625, 3635. The JD 5425 is 65 pto. The offer says "up to 23% off msrp" depending on model, so I was naturally skeptical about what sort of discount we would actually get. I was surprised that our dealer actually knocked 23% off!

The catch is you don't qualify for low rate JDC financing. You have to weigh the difference between what your best (non-EQ) deal off msrp that the dealer is willing to negotiate (maybe 10 to 12%) and taking low rate financing. Depending on terms, you have to decide which is the better route for you.

Anyway, this put it a lot cheaper than a Kubota M7040 (62 pto hp) - nice but the price practically gave me cardiac arrest. Also, keep in mind, any implements that you order with the tractor at time of purchase, assuming it is over 60 pto hp, are also tax exempt.

Actually, my farrier just bought a Kubota M7040 ROPS that was "aged inventory" from "some dealer way up north somewhere". Got a pretty good deal from the sound of it, but probably was somewhat weathered.

So, a lot of "the thrill of the hunt" is being in the right place at the right time too. It was probably the same unit that my local Kubota dealer mentioned to me. If it had been a cab, who knows, I may have ended up with it instead.

One good/bad thing about the high Kubota prices up here, is that it allows me to dream about selling my L3400 privately and getting the benefit of a lower price by either buying a JD4320 cab or a GL4240HSTC from whereever I can get the best deal / dealer combo.

That said, I would want a 6ft bush hog and have to sell my 5 footer, a 6 ft blower with hydraulics and have to selll my 5.5ft one, a 4n1 bucket etc. The bill would be ummmm high.

I think I'll live vicariously through the rest of you that are doing your purchasing.

Josh at Larkin has given me the best quotes I have had. He's top drawer I think.

Kubota apparently has spring specials coming out soon. I want to have a look at them.
