Re-Usable Hydraulic Hose Fitting Tutorial

I was doing a 3/8" hose project and the one thing I found out here locally is some of the suppliers just won't sell single braid hose and if it was to use field reusable fitting the price for the hose was like $7.50 a foot. I just didn't do that. I'm not sure of what these local guys are trying to do, but, they weren't doin' it to me. A buddy gave me some single braid hose and was just the ticket. Just be aware of some of your local venders. bjr

I have been a little curious myself about the liability of the hydraulic vender's, in regards to hose and fittings. Is there any liability on the vender's part to the customer. Would he sell a hose , not knowing how it was being used. If the vendor makes up a hose assembly, is he liable for the damage caused by the hose or fitting exploding. Do they tell the customer he is on his own if mistakes are made?

I think that most of us understand the compatibility of hose and fittings, but what about the rest . The vendor has no idea how the part is going to be used. They just might refuse to make up some hose assembles, based on the safety aspects.

At what point does the liability transfer to the customer?

In so far as the fittings that kennyd posted, I would think that it would have to do with the wording, or lack thereof, in the instructions. I believe that the purpose of the gap given in the instructions kenny recieved was to protect the manufacturers liability if a consumer were to overtighten the fitting.

In a hose recieved as an assembly, I believe that if the assembly failed due to improper assembly by the manufacturer (IE: the fitting was only part way inserted into the hose when crimped, etc), that they would have some liability.

If the consumer improperly used the hose assembly (IE: used 3K psi hose for an application having 10K psi) the liability, I believe, would fall on the consumer.

Just my opinion.

JJ,

We have courts and lawyers to determine that sort of thing. Here at Discount Hydraulic Hose.com, we try to help customers whenever possible, but there are any applications for which our products are simply not suitable. When someone wants to modify a propane tank or repair the brakes on his family car, we tell him that this is not our area of expertise, and our products are not recommended for these applications.

Hey Brian Very nice work of the restore. What did you use to degrease all the metal before painting? Did you use a Case factory color, and if so, where did you get the paint?

Thanks J J, that was a 3 month project that took 5 years.  To start with I pressure washed everything as best as possible, then I used an automotive paint wax-greaser. Most of the sheet metal got sanded down to bare metal and then primered and painted. I used XO Rust Farm & Implement paint from our local True Value Hardware store. Caterpillar Yellow and I used a good automotive paint hardener. The overall job came out pretty good,:D one thing lead to another and before I knew it, I ended up doing waaaaay more than what I intended to do when I had started. That 310 is my first tractor, and it has more than earned its keep.

reuseable fittings are an old technology that are once more gaining popularity. the older ones were bulky and could be a pain on mobile equip. yes if you have available slack you can reuse the same hose after a fresh cut. i only do this in emergency situations then replace the hose, as it is after all stressed, some guys do tend to leave the hoses go to the next failure. the new fittings are also less bulky than the old ones. you can also just replace the center if it becomes damaged and reuse the collar. in the long run you will realize the savings just in fittings. they also make custom fits less of a pain.

A good source of them is hydraulic shops like NAPA and carquest. I got a handfull today from NAPA. Folks bring them in needing a hose done and leave them in the trash.
Also at the junkyard I find them. I also collect the Cat type slide on fitting to.
