Yep, for awhile flashlight batteries and even my hearing aid batteries were supposed to not go in the garbage, but now that's what they say to do with them.
Regular occurrence for garbage truck to catch fire from lithium ion batteries, keep those out of garbage

What really used to confuse (some of) them is to give them $20.03. Maybe not so much today where registers calculate the change, but in the old days it did.

The problem is that there is almost zero market for a lot of the "recyclable" stuff, certainly for most types of plastic other than 1 or 2. Even glass in some cities/towns is now considered trash.

Much of the problem comes from so-called single stream recycling. Easier for residents who can't be bothered to sort, but the cost of sorting takes away what little revenue comes from the sale. That and the fact that more and more third-world countries no longer accept our trash.

We recycle here, and we PAY EXTRA for it...but that's OK, we're saving a lot of landfill space. The recycle trucks come every two weeks, and we fill one of those huge (55gal. plus?) recycle containers with cans, jars, plastic and paper. It will take probably a month to fill a regular trash can, because we compost most everything else (except meat scraps, grease and such that can't be composted). I wish the powers that be would encourage composting; of course in a manner that would keep down the odor and flies.

The real reason 3rd world countries aren't accepting out trass is people, slob people. They don't want garbage but that is what people are throwing in the collection bins. That and not cleaning out containers before tossing them in the recycle. town only has about 2,000 pop but if you look in any of the bins you'll see garbage.

20 years ago I was asked/begged to get a membership at the cash register one time at Sams Club but I more was insistent on just paying just the 10% surcharge for my purchase as was policy at the time. The youngish cashier finally took my money, got the change and slapped it down on the counter and walked away. Good day or not, she should have been slapped.

So I was at a store like that some years ago, and a couple cashiers had dorky backpacks with stuffed animals in them. I asked him what that was about, and he said he was one of the cashiers that hadn't sold enough memberships/credit cards. It was a humiliating thing to do to an employee. I made a point to tell the (big box warehouse) store manager how degrading that was and how that lowered my opinion of them. That corporation makes bazillions of dollars, and is horrible to its employees - they are the working poor. They aren't even that great to their customers with their long checkout lines. The founding family members are wealthy beyond belief, but I guess that's not enough for them - they have to degrade and under pay their employees.

I am no longer a member of that "Club" Low prices sometimes aren't worth the cost. I would shop at Costco if one was nearby. They at least make an effort to value their employees,

I am sorry you had a bad experience with that cashier, but maybe they didn't want to be forced to wear that $%^& backpack with a stuffed animal.
