I came across an article about the dog sledders who ferried Diphtheria antitoxin from Seward to Nome. Those men, and especially Leonhard Seppala, had to have been some of the toughest people on the planet to do what they did in those conditions. You can read the story at Third String Goalie: 29 January 2012 starting almost 1/2 the way down the page right after the pic of the two ships in the ice.

Adam Brown
Incredible story of a navy seal.

When Navy SEAL Adam Brown woke up on March 17, 2010, he didn't know he would die that night in the Hindu Kush Mountains of Afghanistan, but he was ready: In a letter to his children, not meant to be seen unless the worst happened, he wrote he was not afraid of anything that might happen to me on this Earth, because I know no matter what, nothing can take my spirit from me.

Adam Brown died during an assault on a heavily defended Taliban compound placing himself in the line of fire to protect other members of his unit who were pinned down by heavy enemy fire. Brown charged the enemy and was able to reach a better firing location to engage them and draw fire away from his team. His actions were successful in relieving his men but Adam Brown was struck by enemy fire and killed in the process.

One other team member was wounded but Adam Brown’s actions had saved the day and the enemy compound was eventually captured and all enemy fighters were killed in the battle.

Adam Brown left behind a wife and two children.

I knew he served. Just read his Wikipedia entry.

I already thought he was a pretty classy guy. Reading today about the effort he put into insisting that he be given combat duty has elevated my opinion even higher.

Many people may have forgotten about his time in the U.S. Army. He is the son
of an Air Force General, and an accomplished Golden Gloves boxer, and he graduated
from Pomona College with a B.S. degree, and then became a Rhodes Scholar from Oxford University .

He joined the U.S. Army at the prompting of his father. After graduating from Officer Candidate School, he attended and graduated from both Army Airborne and Ranger training in the very top of each class.
He was selected for U. S. Army Special Forces Training, but refused so that he could attend pilot training where he earned his wings, and became an accomplished U.S. Army helicopter (gunship) pilot, and achieved the rank of Captain.

He was about to be promoted to the rank of Major, and appointed to teach at West Point when he resigned his commission from the Army to go into music and acting.
