So Friday I had to go pick up a Repo Boat about 3 minutes south of Knoxville, Tennessee. I live in North Eastern Indiana mid way between Indianapolis and Ft. Wayne.
I took a State Highway, IN-3 south to I-74, then joined up with I-75 south to Knoxville then about 30 miles of State Highways and back roads to the Hotel. On the way down it was just me. 422 miles I average 60mph on the State Highways and 74mph on the Interstates. It took me 6:45 and I only made one stop for gas and a Subway Sandwich all at the same truck stop. I average 15.4655mpg.
I should state my truck is a extended cab 4x4 Short Bed, 2" lift, 33" tires, Nissans Big Tow Package.
After spending the night in the Hotel I found a car wash and cleaned up the truck, ate some breakfast, then drove 20 miles to the Marina. I stopped 3 miles short and filled up the truck once again. I arrived at 9:30 am and a quick check of the boat and paperwork done I loaded it up and got on the road right at noon.
The boat is a 2007 29' Larson Cabrio with a 9' beam. Its sitting on a 12,000# tandem axle Performance Trailer with Disc Brakes. The boat is equipped with a 6.2L MX Mercruiser (GM Based), 5KW Kohler Gen Set, ect. According to the documents I got it weighted 8,820# without fuel or water. It had about 350# of fuel and water on board so it weighed in right at 9,200# give or take. I will weigh it in the weeks to come.
The trip home took exactly 8 hours. I stopped after about 30 minutes to check the trailer over and get a soda. I then drove 3 hours and stopped for fuel and lunch. 3 more hours for fuel, then the last 30 minutes home. It was 448 miles door to door. I ran the first 40 miles on Tennessee State Highways and did 55mph or so. Once on I-75 I keep it right around 68mph. It had no problem with the grades in Northern Tennessee and Southern Kentucky and never got above 3,500 rpm. On flat ground it would run right at 2,200 rpm. I averaged 9.318mpg on the way home. I should also add the temperature was right around 80 deg most of the trip and then in the 73 deg range the last hours as the sun set.
I was going to snap a pic of the boat and truck but it was dark when I got in. I will get on in the next week. I was worried about the squat of the truck but it maybe lowered it 2" max and towed like a dream. Here is a pic of the boat the bank sent me, pic of the boat in my drive, and my truck. The barn is 52x32 with 12 foot tall by 20 wide sliding door to give you a idea of the size. The concrete pad is 15' out from the barn so I would guess its nearly 35' long on the trailer.
