I know exactly what you're talking about. We used the same 'system' on the farm for those old metal quart cans.

Here's a google image of a store bought modern version.

It doesn't look like it will work with the wide-mouth quart containers that seem to becoming the norm.

Could be worse. My Kubota uses 9 quarts. I use Rotella T6 synthetic but it only comes in gallons and quarts. The problem is the gallons are easy to get, the local Walmart always stocks them while the 1 quart bottles aren't. I usually buy it on-line from Walmart and get free shipping but I have had bottle leak. While Walmart is real good about sending out a replacement it's still messy and the plastic bag they put the bottles in is worthless as they aren't sealed well enough to stop the leaking oil.

My oil supplies come in litres.

So what should capacities be designed for, imperial units, American units or metric? Or should there be a design for each different set of units??

I do not care which one,, PICK ANY ONE!! My Honda did not select any of them.

This is not something new to the America Honda Motor Company.
They have been designing cars specifically for the US market for decades.
For those decades, the oil change equaled the jug size Walmart sold.
Now,,, they change to an odd amount? Not quarts, not liters,,,

That is just ,,,, D U M B - !!!

I found another 'dumb' design. My chainsaw holds less then a quart of gas but more than 1/5 of a gallon so I can't fill it up an even number of times from a gallon of gas. I guess you could solve these problem by spilling a lot so the can is empty on the 4th fill.

All of my Hondas use partial bottles. 4.5 to 4.6 quart range. That's a 99 Accord, and 2 Odysseys (00 and 07). Assuming yours has VCM or something similar you may eventually need to add oil between oil changes. Our Accord uses some oil so the extra goes in the trunk. The 07 is new to me so not sure if it will use oil but it does have VCM which is known to eat some oil when the cylinders are disabled.

Just a note from a former industry member. Studies, statistics and surveys show beyond any doubt, that almost all oil changes occur at shops, not at home. Mess, time, environmental discard rules, driveway stains and homeowner association rules have stopped this practice at home.

So, shops, dealerships and service stations have dispensers with a dial and the proper amount of oil is supposed to come out of 55 gal drums. I had a case 6 months ago where the amount dispensed at the Cadillac dealership was 3-1/2 quarts of Mobil 1 LOW. Who knows, drum empty, tech was blind, or hose was pinched. But, the auto manufacturer only wants slippery oil for fuel economy during an EPA test. If there is no leakage or burning, the synthetics can run 20,000 miles or more. My CTS counts engine revolutions and pops the oil life fraction based on engine age, revs and service condition maps (heat, airflow, temperature and transmission gear populations.

Welcome to the new world, Captain Ramius. Dump the extra oil in your lawn mower fuel tank or on some driveway weeds.

The oils change guys probably like the partial quart capacities so they can "round up" and charge more. :D

For years I was under the impression that overfilling an engine will cause seals to blow out, or maybe that was transmissions. Anyway I took my Duramax truck to get injectors and pump replaced because over 5000 miles it they added an extra 12 quarts to 9 quart system. I gut them replaced but no one seemed concerned about running way over full for that length of time.

The point I suppose is, if I can run waaaay overfull, not on purpose obviously, why not just dump the 5 quarts in a 4.5 quart engine and don't get concerned about a little extra.
