Rear attachments, no loader?

Newbe question here, but, can i run a tiller or power rake without a front loader attached? I know i need the weight to counter balance the loader bucket but i am not sure about the other way around. I thought i would ask before i became a test dummy. Thanks, Gregp

No you dont need a loader unless you plan on using a back-hoe

Most all tractors have weight racks for the front that facilitate mounting "suitcase weights" . I spent the day yesterday on a tractor without a front loader, and a 1400lb bush hog on the back end. I have 660 lbs of iron hanging on the front. Wheels stay glued to the ground.....

You will know if you need to add weight to the front end, and finding out won't be anything tragic. Just be aware that when you lift the 3pt and the front end gets light, you need to add weights. In the interim, don't lift the 3pt, but steer with the brakes (that is possible on most tractors but not all).

Normally the light front end shows when going up a slope and lifting the attachment at the same time. Be cautious and you will remain safe (not in the category of 'test dummy', IMO).

After he finds out the front end is light.. then he'll learn about 'suitcase' weights. After he goes and prices them, hel'' then learn how to make his own weighted bumper! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Soundguy is exactly right. Look around at a thrift store, flea market, etc. for some old barbell weights really cheap and modify them for your own front bumper weights.

Thanks for the replies. I will probably leave the loader on to pick up debry when i use my power rake. But, i will take it off when i use the tiller, easier to get around i think. Thank you all for the information.
