I would like to know if anybody out there has ever built there own cutter frame. I have a JD 503 cutter with good gearbox but the frame is starting to rust out.Would this be cost effective or would I be better off buying a new one. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I just got done replacing the sheet metal on a 5ft cutter. It was a heavy duty cutter with 4 blades but the top and side sheetmetal was light stuff so I cut it out and put on 3-16 steel that I had. now it will never rust or rip out. I dought that it will even dent. It wasn't a hard job. just time consuming. But then I have a miller 250 MIG welder so once I start welding I don't have to stop. cost wise it was cheap as I had some spare sheet steel and the time. The main thing is the gearbox and blade assy. The rest you can fabricate if you have the knowledge and equipment.

Ive rebuilt quite a few and they arent that hard, I hate the hobby farmer specials i rebuild. All the obby farmers here buy rusted hogs then weld little squares like a patch work quilt on them. Mostly they weld or try to weld the plates onto the frame. Ill then take the gear box and fab a new body and frame from the size plate i want. I buy alot of them that have the radius of the blades worn in the deck. Most folks think the shaft is bent and usually give them away or get scrap prices. Usually its the splines are worn from the stump jumper castle nut gettin loose. ill braze 3 equidistant female splines up and file them down and then run the jumper up there with the 1 inch impacts wrench. Im now making a 38 inch cuttel from an abused 5 footer to make a side monted hog.

i've seen a few of those patch jobs you mention and thats not what i want at all. just bought a new kubota l3130 and just would like to have nice attachments to go with it (can't afford new).i hadn't been into it yet, but gearbox and blade assembly seems to be in good shape. i was thanking about using 3/16 for decking,6 inch channel with bottom tapered front an rear, 3/8 gearbox mounting plate, about 3/8x3 flat bar upper front/rear with tailwheel an hookup assembly off my old unit. chain guards and a coat of paint should be close to what i want.

thats the right wy to do it. Ive owned many nice bush hogs buy doing what you described. Ive bolught a few and redone them, some f the older heavier ones and made good money at it. Also a big ticket is to rebuild old finish mowers and such.
