Here in Florida we call 3.5" of rain a Summer Afternoon! :)
(the 3.5" was in an hour) we had little over 6" in the 24 hr period in basically two storms. Having been around FL for a month or so I can say I think I have more elevation change in just my 22 acres than all of Florida lol... & pretty sure within a mile linearly from my place is more elevation change for real than all of Florida. :D

add in a vid of 1st of June week prior to the flood, same area shot from the bridge getting replaced.

Well thought I would do a bit of updating, I took a few hours and a few pictures toady of the work on the project.

Here is how much flow is going on NOW after two weeks of only some dribbles only and none is going thru the culverts it is flowing under/thru the gravel and into the bedrock cracks.

As always click the pic for full size photo and see ALL of the recent ones.

Dang near there on this side of the culverts.

these will be face rocks along the inlet side and will do same on outlet side they are from football size up to laundry basket size. Have a good number of larger flagstones to use as well.

Been thinking about putting in a few bags of mortar / cement to help bind & set them into thoughts?

bottom of one area of the wash in the woods where the gravel is coming from first few loads were bone dry, had to dig down & tear out 5 or 6 yards to get to the dribbles running on bedrock.

different course rock bar took out 5 or 6 loads from here but has steel wall to my back so hard to maneuver the tractor in and out.

some of the PICKERS that makes it hard to scoop it up..

concrete / cement /motar 2 to 4 inches thick to set everything into.

you might try some rebar mesh or chicken wire, even a chain link fence. toss some motar down. then press rebar or chicken wire onto the top, then some more motar down. then your rocks

the rebar mesh or chicken wire, will help reduce large cracks from happening. the problem is trying to keep all the wire / rebar inside the concrete to prevent rusting

if you can fill most of the cracks in, you can reduce chance of mud/dirt getting into cracks and having weeds sprout up here and there.
also try and reduce areas that will "pool water" so during winter, ice doesn't cause additional crack / chipping of areas.

you won't be able to use mutric acid, to clean stuff up as you go about things. so keep some 5 gallon buckets of clean water handy, and then dump some water into a "dirty bucket" for a sponge / old rag. or what not to wipe off any motar you got onto something. as water dirties dump it, and add some more clean water to the dirty bucket.

if ya never messed with concrete / motar i feel for ya, in trying to get the correct water ratio correct. try to avoid adding to much water,

if you don't have generator, but have a cheap 2 bag mixer for conrete/motar. mix the stuff up in the mixer, and then dump into your FEL bucket. and run it down were you need it. then shovel it out from there just make sure once your done for the day, wash bucket out and take a hammer and pop out any dried concrete.

You keep saying that water is running through the gravel around your tile. That's not good as they will never stay. When you get big rains the water pressure will cause the little seep to increase and the nest thing you know the tiles are floating enough the gravel starts to move and then the tiles leave.

My fix would be to remove all of the bridge. Dig out channel to 2-3 inches below creek bed if possible and put down a layer of good wet Ag lime and pack it in. Back fill with lime in layers and compact. Then add dirt or gravel to top and rip rap to head and tail of tiles. This works very well around here for stopping the water flow around the tiles.
Also a double wall poly tile will carry more water than a galvanized tile. Because it's smooth and has less resistance to flow.

thanks for reply's: I think the seepage will seal up pretty soon as sand and silt settles into the small areas. this creek/wash is dry much of summer only really runs enough to 1/3 fill the 8" most of the time. Then there are those 3.5" of rain in 45 min (6+" for the day) that we had in Jun week I started the thread. The rain happened after 2 weeks of pretty steady on/off rains so ground was already saturated when the flash rain happened. The property drains maybe 200 acres off the hill top I'm 3/4 way up the hill. Just so happens my property has a lot of FALL (up to the old dam) that washed out in the 1969 storm. From the dam out 500 yards the fall is VERY STEEP (25 feet fall per 100 foot run) or better my place has maybe (3'fall in 50' run on ave.) with sections of (6~8'fall/50' run) by estimates.

I will look for some Crete and stick the rocks in place with the fence/rebar/wire for reinforcement. I MAY end up taking a while on the do to costs. The Clutch on my tractor has been sick for a couple years and I been using it but to tear out everything the re-do it is a non starter at this point. No way to access the far side without the bridge being there (or the culverts.)

The storm we got was 2nd worst one I have seen in last 15 years of ownership so not a regular thing and the way/area the culverts are set will let FLOOD water go out and around the bridge/culverts & the old metal beams should prevent much washout over the top should some happen. The downside of the culverts is set up so top of the driving surface will be 1 or 2 feet higher than the grass/low side so heavy floods or clogs should do little damage as the weeds will prevent erosion of the yard area.

Did some more work yesterday in woods on the culverts, I started by pulling out some of the boards and back filling into the area under the bridge. After I got most of my areas two or 3 scoops they get soft & makes getting the tractor in//out a bit sticky. So after those fill I went to upper wash and pulled some rocks.

here is one of the bigger bucket full sized rocks, kind of hard for the tractor to swallow em ;)

as always click pick for full sized view.

Didn't feel like trying to move it a 2nd time so dropped it into the hole...

I grabbed one more load after the rock above & tossed in one that was just as big but added 4 or 5 basket ball sized rocks in with it. The rear wheels got REAL LIGHT so had to back it down the hill & kept it all nice & low. same as with the one above not wanting to MOVE it more than once I stuck it in place. I'll probably not do much more for a few days on it as it needs to settle in where I been driving tractor and my arms need it too lol...

been a while since I put up anything on the project. I have some more done BUT took on a NEW JOB and still in school so time for this project has been low. I put in place a few more BIG rocks and spent some time gathering said rocks and a pile more for when I DO have free time to place them. Just been dumping them on/near the wash culverts and dry placing a few of the bigger rocks. Some of which are too big to easily move even with the tractor but as always took some pics and to see full size click the photos

I was trying to dig out a multi-floral rose and this got in the way so made use of it.

Leveled the up hill side and placed the big flat long rock at that point.

this is a bend where it washed out some 20 or so feet up hill from the culverts and I placed these rocks and stacked them to slow the erosion in that spot.

same spot as above with rain flow.

bigger picker I had to pull out using chains. FEL picked it up but was a LOT of wet rock weight.

the Big rock went on down hill side of the culvert to prevent backside washout.

I had the backhoe on so I took care of a couple stumps too that I had in way for two years figured the roots would have been softer but NOPE

So been spending a couple hours a week on the culvert fix, Friday I pulled out another BIG rock and put it on the back side of the bridge (with a few issues.)

I also been filling a few bucket loads of gravel as well in between. I took a few pics and as always click on pic for full size view of the pics or to see all of them on this project.

This is what the uphill (inlet side) is looking like at the moment a bit more fill is in and a few more rocks stuck in there.

This one I planed on putting on down stream side of the bridge to prevent washing away and hold gravel back fill in place.

The tractor struggled a LOT with this one but then so did I and the old deck boards.
I planned on having the rock slide down the deck boards and into place to left of the culverts in the pic.
The rock however had a mind of it's own.

it took a few tries to chain and drag it farther up but eventually it landed here

The fill is OK and as you can see I ended up needing to drive across it without the deck boards in place lol

I like these last two for view from farther back as it shows what the area I'm working in looks like from both sides.

Hope ya enjoyed.

it is OK until you hit a pile of them while digging a straight trench or foundation :/ There are some REAL big ones around locally as it is all glacial till for most part. Lots of big round rocks grind together and make a pile wedged together. often 6 or 8 basketball to bushel basket sized rocks will be wedged/piled in around a dinning room table sized rock or two. If Ohio had more than traces of gold I might find some under these piles ! :D (Wishful thinking ...)

I started collecting rocks and have a couple piles one is 4ft high, 10 wide and 20 feet long collected about that grew out of ground after frosts & creek bottom. Then I have half dozen the size of the last one set Stone Hedge fashion around a big fire pit... Most of the BIG ones my little tractor can't move at all so I have to put up with them setting where they lay or talk a neighbor with bigger tractor to help.
