Recommend a new bench vise

I have a large Yost vise that came off a military 5 ton wrecker. I like it! Look in yard sales, and local auctions.

Better to buy an old Yost. The current offerings are all made in China.

Don't fall for the "designed and engineered" in <insert any US city here trash>. Or as Yost says, "Built to Yost Vises Specifications". It's where it's made that counts. The maker is the one throwing trash and scrap into the melt furnace.

Best buy on a vise today is one of these,

That one was my dad's, I can't remember a time when it wasn't here on the farm. Anyway, I see them in decent shape for $200 or less fairly often and worth EVERY penny of it!

OR, maybe you can find one like this Starett,

I found 20 miles out in the Alaskan bush, and pack it out on your back like I did that one. lol

I have the 880-D2 (8")Yost. Used it since 2016. Good hard reversible jaws and reversible movement. I like the large flat work surface presented when the jaws are closed.

Same for my 8". The Yosts are ductile iron and have a deep throat and good hard sharp replaceable jaws and pipe jaws. Nice action. Huge clamping range.

Strong enough that you dont have to baby it, but I wouldnt be waling directly on it with a two handed hammer or using long pry bars or cheaters indiscriminately. Mine is mounted to a HF motorcycle lift table for adjustable height, and under braced directly to the floor with a 6x6 for heavier usage.

I ran across an ad in FB market place for 5-6 tables for a couple of dollars..(20.00 each)
I went and bought them and to my surprise, one of them had a Yost bench vise attached to it.. this thing is no toy.!! It came with smooth jaws and on occasion I’ve had to “snug it up” with a cheater bar..& it held everything I can throw at it.!!

Those jaws might be reversible, with serrated on other side. Mine are. Have you checked?
