Recommendation for plow truck tires.

I'm sure you know that you can improve the plowing performance of your truck by adding weight to the back. Even just 500 pounds will make a big difference.

Yes. I usually keep my log winch on the tractor all winter, leaving my tractor ballast (around 1100-1200lbs) to go on the truck.

I have run 235/85-16 tires on a 2500HD and they work great.

The type of tire tread depends on what your driving in. If your problems are in deep snow, get get a open tread like a mud tire. If your having problems after the deep snow has been plowed, but when there is that slick layer like ice, then get a snow/ice winter tire. (Look for the snowflake/mountain symbol on the sidewall.) These tires hav a softer compound and many sipes to grip on ice.

I finally switched over to a winter tire. Now I have two sets of wheels and tires, summer and winter. I don't think it matters too much on what brand of tire. A winter tire is just that. They are designed to get maximum traction on ice and snow. I have Blizzak winter treads on my 2500HD I can now plow my steep icey driveway in two-wheel drive. Don't forget to put the proper amount of rear ballast in the body. That also makes a big difference

I would go to the junkyard and try and get 4 cheap steel wheels for the truck and mount studded snow tires. I would stay away from the name brand tires as they may work well but you'll pay extra and most of the cheap ones will work well with studs. In the spring/ fall I would just swap tires/ wheels over. That way you're not paying twice a year to mount them since you're not allowed to run studded tires in the summer.

After plowing commercial for 23 years the last 6 years or so have been on Cooper Mud and Snows. Best tires I have used for plowing. My GM's got about 800 lbs of weight behind the tires and the Fords got about 1300 lbs to make everything feel good. CJ

Cjone, I ran those coopers studded on 4 different trucks, my tire guy talked me into the Duratracs and I am glad he did. I didn't think there could be such a difference. They are more expensive though
