Recommendation for plow truck tires.

Cjone, I ran those coopers studded on 4 different trucks, my tire guy talked me into the Duratracs and I am glad he did. I didn't think there could be such a difference. They are more expensive though

Sent from my iPad using TractorByNet

Good to know, we can't use studs here in Michigan except for in our Snowmobiles!! That will be the only snowplowing I will be doing anymore, officially done plowing. CJ

First off there's no doubt that a narrow tire will perform better in snow and there's no question that a dedicated snow tire being of a softer compound will grab the ice better, however when you load the truck up with the plow and a counterbalance in the rear a wider tire won't make that much of a difference I'm running 305-65-18 BFGoodrich T K O stock size was 275-70-18 never experienced a problem with plowing the truck goes through anything just picked up a new extreme V can't wait to use it this winter. As someone mentioned earlier I don't think it's as important with the truck loaded as it is for car the narrow tire issue. Many years with a 9 foot straight blade never an issue mostly commercial lots, plus I leave the tires on year-round no hassle of jacking the truck up to change out tires :) take care

I agree with Radium as I'm a life long up-state N.Y'er and I run the same BF Goodrich KO's, but 305-75-R16's and do they move through the N.Y. snows that we get here in the foot hill of the Adirondacks.I Do have a Fisher 8' plow for the F350 but my Grand L 3540 with 72" FEL or the Land Pride 3584 back blade takes care of it easier. Now if the snow gets read deep then the LA2674 rear snow blower comes out.Hope this helps?

I agree with what some guys have said already, you want narrower tires in the snow. I like these tires the seem to hold well.

You will love the V once you get used to it. I cut over 1/3 of the time off my plow route with my 9'6" V plow. The Superdutys handle it great esp with the Diesel. CJ

Yes indeed the V plows are timesaver used one for years on brothers truck that's why i bought one. I'll have to make do with my little 5.4 considering I had a 9 XBlade and never had a problem the V will only be more productive when taking down 4 foot snow drifts in front of parking lots. I have been plowing with gas engines for 20+ years and never had the need for a diesel not saying they're not nice so please don't jump on me because I'm saying this I just think it's overkill, I remember when most trucks back in the 80s I owned didn't have more than 250 hp and I still managed making a living plowing with half ton pickup trucks LOL not to mention the cold weather issues between freezing DEF and always keeping them plugged in, its just too much work for me and let's not forget the price of diesel in New TAX York :) take care

You took my comment wrong, it has nothing to do with horsepower but everything to do with weight. I have plowed with everything from a inline 6 all the way to my 7.3 and never had a power issue with anything. But I will say the diesel has been way more fuel efficient than any of my gassers when plowing, you will get a kick out of this, I HAD a 2000 GM 2500 with a 6L in it and in 1 storm I was out of fuel before I had 60 miles on the truck!! That 1 went down the road quick. And yes I also have a 5.4 in a 08 f-150. CJ

Whatever tires you choose, get them studded. No studded tires in Michigan? How can that be?

I didn't take your comment wrong I was simply putting out my thoughts on plowing and what I found to be the most cost-effective means of making a living with it. To be honest with you I've never found a diesel that has ever impressed me with gas mileage with the price of diesel fuel my brothers two trucks 7.3 and 6.4 are anything but fuel-efficient ;-) not saying a 5.4 does any better especially during heavy storms, but nearly $.80 difference per gallon it adds up through the winter whether he's plowing or driving the truck back to the shop and don't forget adding in the fuel supplement for the pollution control system which it burns through when plowing heavy I've often thought there's something wrong with his truck to use that much DEF? As far as weight goes you're right the super duties do a great job with their sheer weight not to mention a transfer tank 65 gallons fuel adds to the overall weight of the vehicle on top of the 1200 pounds plow take a guess what that truck weighs that's in the picture I've went through scales you won't believe it when I tell you :) by the way I listen to everybody it's the only way you can learn even at my age take care

Years ago when I was a kid I remember grooves cut in the roads from studded tires, so they outlawed them years ago in Michigan.
