Recommendation for Web Hosting service

Do you have suggestions for how to solve my problem? Or should I just quit doing the automatic updates?

Is there a way to randomize the uploads?

Just curious what the purpose of uploading to a website every 5 minutes is? I ask because you might be able to accomplish the same thing with an email, a text message, etc. Just thinking outloud.

I don't think using a different method ftp, sftp, ssh will make a difference, it'll still look like a DoS attack if it is cyclic. Worth trying, but odds it will be treated the same as ftp.

You could be right about the connection types that have been cited...
I'm curious if the DoS protection would flag a connection that was initiated by a script on the server that would grab the WX data files from a directory on OP's local machine via dedicated IP address ?? rather than a user/site owner initiating the connection...?

There are alternatives to FTP, SFTP etc. etc... one is PHP...similar to the way the TBN servers are "updated" every time someone starts a thread or posts a reply...

It would not be difficult to use PHP to upload and manipulate the WX data files...A simple "POST" form HTML file...executed in a browser w/ a little javascript to refresh the POST (submit) function on whatever time interval that's desired...and presto...!

I use Ipage for one of my host and I upload every minute useing Weather Display software never had a problem.

Almost any company other than NS. For those suggesting that sending data every 5 minutes is somehow tripping a Denial of Service monitor-- I'm not buying it. Characteristics of such attacks involve flooding a server with enough data to overload it and thereby crash it or at the very least slow it down. FTPing a file every 5 minutes is not unlike what numerous types of monitoring programs do.

I don't think the culture at NS has changed since way back in the days when they had an absolute monopoly in assigning domain names. Their pricing was outrageous and they were making tons of $$$ but you had no other options. Even when they were forced to allow others in the game, their pricing was way out of line with what the competition charged-- taking advantage IMO of those not away there were other, better options. Almost every interaction I've had with NS over the years has been... well, "unpleasant" to say the least.

No offense, but it doesn't matter what you're buying, NS said their DoS monitoring software was triggered. DoS software doesn't just alert on a flooding attack, it looks for lots of different activity that might indicate a site is being probed by a hacker and/or under attack.

Yes, their position might have been to claim their concerned had something to with DoS, but since the kind of activity under discussion has nothing whatsoever to do with real DoS, that's simply an umbrella excuse to deal with any activity that they want to restrict. Again, having deal with them off and on for many years I can't say as I'd trust anything they say. Again-- IMO.

Over the years I've had many web hosts and have ended up leaving many of them because of attitude problems displayed by the sys admins. I don't mean to generalize or stereotype here, but it's not uncommon to find someone in that roll that has quite a Napoleon complex and can't resist lording his little bit of power over those with lesser access privs. It's especially awkward when I actually DO know more about the issue than the supposedly all knowing sys admin, and often it's impossible to get past that person to someone that can knowledgeably deal with the problem and cares enough to do so. Fortunately there are thousands of web hosting outfits to choose from, but the problem is finding one. Cnet.com has some decent reviews, but they tend to be a bit dated.

Just because DoS is what it's being called does not mean that whatever defensive software NS is using is not more encompassing...

You will see this "attitude" more with "resellers" that hold leases from a server farm and like to play sys_admin...rather than from full service hosts that maintain their own servers...

I've dealt with a lot of different hosts (the whole gamut) doing work for clients...personally, I have been very satisfied with OLM for my own (and several client) sites to stay with them for the past 15 years...and the service has gotten even better over that time...
