Funny what parents (myself included) think their kids will and won't want to partake in VS what the kids really want to do. :)

I smoked my first chicken and pork roast last summer.... man, I've been missing the good stuff, too! :licking:

We have a Krups. It works alright, but I honestly have only ever used it to slice bauern style rye bread.

It's funny this came up now. I've been really thinking about a slicer, but wondered how bad clean up is. Do they need to be taken apart after each use? I may be wrong, but everything seems better "freshly sliced", but if that meant a 15 min. cleaning job just for a good sandwitch……
I just smoked a pork shoulder for pulled pork and threw on 4 boneless chicken breasts @ $1.89/pound for "sammies". A heck of a lot cheaper and a zillion times better, a slicer would be nice.

Seems ease of cleanup is a factor in reading reviews... some are very difficult and/or require tools and others are simple... still in the learning stages.

To make a short long story short... the boys were excited because their parents said they could eat as much sausage as they wanted tonight only... and the girls really wanted to help... so for about 4 hours me and the kids were making sausage... platter after platter of sausages and the kids had a sausage feast that night... much to the dismay of my brother!

My wife's parents are from the Czech Republic and she has a Aunt that lives in the country. She has a story where, when she was a little girl, her and her sister were staying at her Aunts house and the Aunt had rabbits so the girls were playing with the rabbits. The next day they went out to play with the rabbits and one of them was 'missing'..... she still won't eat rabbit (again) to this day

Cleanup can be a pain. Especially if you are just want to use it for a few slices. I don't break mine out unless I going to slice up a whole salami or something. The Rival I have the blade comes off with a screwdriver (big slot, a quarter works) for hand washing. The moving 'carriage' just goes in the dishwasher. However the back part, which gets the dirtiest, does not come off easily. While small enough to fit you can't put the whole unit in the dishwasher because of the motor. So the rest of it is kind of a pain to clean.

When we were visiting my aunts farm she asked if the kids like Chicken?

Soon there was one less chicken outside and I mentioned it to my brothers... we didn't touch the chicken and she asked why... my brother said it was because the one on the table was his favorite...

Gotta love farm living...

I guess this is why years later he thought his girls would eat the sausages...

They still tell stories about the day they made sausage and had as much as they wanted to eat that night...

We made small ones... regular ones and a Giant One for the boys parents.

It didn't bother them in the least...

They also had the Dark German Bread and my brother said his kids wouldn't eat it... well the cousins told them this bread makes you strong and gives energy... the girls ate the bread like it was going out of style.

One place had a bad yellow jacket problem... they simply would not leave you alone if you had any food... the cousins said just ignore them as they only want something to eat...

Later the girls were back in California at a friends outdoor birthday party... some yellow jackets showed up and all the other little girls were crying and running around... my nieces just sat there enjoying the birthday cake...

My Rival, the HF one and the Krups appear to be identical.

Beautiful place. I remember visiting my Oma and Opa, not Austria, but what would now be north central Germany. I seem to remember yellow jacket problems as well. Last time I was there was the early 80's.

^^^Do you keep in touch with the German side?

I really enjoyed the time I spent there working... it was right after college.
The life was a slower pace with lots of time for family AND it is where I discovered tractors!

Even today... most are very focused on local organic meats and produce... and of course beer was a staple!

I imagine it was like that here with the family butcher and baker in the neighborhood where your kids went to school with his kids... etc.

Property staying in the family for generations is actually quite common.... people still build their own homes on a pay as you go plan... build the shell, put on a good roof and build out the floors as needed.
