^^^Do you keep in touch with the German side?

I really enjoyed the time I spent there working... it was right after college.
The life was a slower pace with lots of time for family AND it is where I discovered tractors!

Even today... most are very focused on local organic meats and produce... and of course beer was a staple!

I imagine it was like that here with the family butcher and baker in the neighborhood where your kids went to school with his kids... etc.

Property staying in the family for generations is actually quite common.... people still build their own homes on a pay as you go plan... build the shell, put on a good roof and build out the floors as needed.

Sorry, late response. I only ever really hear about the family when I talk to my mom. It's her sisters and side of the family that are over there. Unfortunately my family is pretty well spread out and we don't see each other as often as we should. I still have fond memories of visiting Deutschland and hanging out with cousins that I would very rarely ever see.

It's actually the girls keeping in touch with their second cousins...

There is a whole network of 12 to 14 year olds texting and using Facetime... simply amazing when 35 years ago you had to go to to a public phone and now the kids can be just about anywhere in communicate.

My nieces love Austria... they are always mistaken for locals... could be the dresses I bought for them...

Part of it is visiting the farms and farm life... especially all of the new baby animals...

The oldest was there when she was 14 months and made a big hit... she was simply so outgoing and friendly.

Later when they planned a family trip when she was 7 and her younger sisters were 3 and 5 she was always reassuring them how nice it was and promising to show them around... again, she was only 14 months at the time but spoke like a seasoned travel veteran.

I'm leaning towards buying one made in Italy... although, several have told me they have slicers stored that they no longer use... so I might simply be gifted one.

One thing I've learned with travel is my Austrian friends love visiting the United States as much as like visiting there...

Yes, over the last 30 years we have had some visits from aunts, uncles, and cousins from time to time. It was always a fun affair with many trips to the local store to restock the fridge with beer. I haven't seen any of them for at least 10 years though. I should probably try and get back in touch with my cousins. Might give me a good excuse to knock some rust off of my German.

As far as your nieces go, I really don't think that there is anything quite so enriching for a youngster as visiting foreign lands. I really think that my travels to Europe as a youngster had a great effect on my attitude and outlook toward others. I was fortunate enough to have been able to visit France, Italy, Austria, and Switzerland one summer. My father even took me to East Germany for a few days on a business trip one time. That was a real eye opener.
