On my older tractors, as Soundguy would probably say, if you can figure out how to start it... it's yours.

If I remember they used to hang horse thiefs. Todays tractors are the modern horses. so hanging should still solve the problem.

I agree that you shouldn't have to worry about something parked on your own land, but a piece of chain and a padlock will go a long way in deterring a thief. Turn wheels all the way in one direction, run chain through steering wheel and lock it in that position. Anything to slow down or discourage them from selecting your piece of equipment.

The tractor was in a shed, at the end of a 1/2 mile long private road. Not visible from the highway. Had to go on the property to see or get the tractor. Now my other tractors and trailer have been moved to my house and chained to a tree. I hate not trusting people. If this doesn't work, I may be soliciting funds for legal defense.

Did the theif drive away on the tractor or did he come with a trailer? The reason I ask is that my tractor lives down a long woods road with a locked gate and isn't visible from the mian road, but is otherwise unsecured. The main road is 3-4 miles in either direction before you hit a state highway. That's a long way to drive a stolen tractor. But someone with a trailer could drive of with it.

But, my homeowner's policy does insure against theft and vandalism.

He had a wrecker and trailer. This is not the property I live on, but a 60 acre piece about 2 miles from my house. This road dead ends into my property.

It is now in the hands of the sheriff's office and prosecutor.

"but a piece of chain and a padlock will go a long way in deterring a thief"

I had my trailer stolen two months ago that was chained to a 26" dia. tree with grade 70 chain and the best master lock that money can buy, but $19.95 four ft. HF bolt cutter does not slow them down. My surveillance cameras caught the theft. Less than 30 seconds to remove the chain! About 10 min. to hook it to the truck. Looked like their first time backing up to a ball hitch. Their first turn out of the parking lot nailed the guard rail with the left side tires and fender. Hit hard enough to slide the trailer about two ft. to the right. So if any one sees a damaged duel axel 7500# for sale cheep let me know. It has 3 -1/2" eye bolts welded to each side for tie downs. A Jerry James brand and it was in Springfield Illinois.

suposably my kubota insurence will pay for it if it gets stolen but the thing sits either in the garage or shed 90% of the time. I used to secure our boat with one of those plastic encased cabels and a lock duno if that would slow em down or not. I heard a story about a guy who had a jag back in the 80's and it got stolen so he chained it to a tree when he got it back. A couple months later while he was away on business making jag payments someone cut down the tree and drove off in the jag. Id have to agree with some on here though insurence or not if i saw someone stealing my tractor i have a real nice ar-15 id have to put to use carefully so i dont damage my tractor, but i live in oklahoma so i would then have to drag them inside and find a butcher knife to put in their hand, lol.

locks help keep honest people honest my dad always said

If you are talking about Kubota "loan insurance" all that will do is pay off the loan - not replaced the tractor.

The reason why I would steal tractors that are left out in the open if I was a thief is that they are harder to trace and find once stolen than cars. If not chopped up and parted out cars are driven on the public roads where lots of law enforcement hang out. Tractors can spend their whole life in the outback being used to their fullest where only the cows see them.
